Do you leave the AC on when you go on vacation?

Sort of MM... I wasn't sure where to put this. Sorry if it's a dumb question....

DH and I are going out of town all of next week. It's looking like it's going to be in the 90s all week. I'm thinking we should just turn off the AC all week to save on the bill. DH thinks we should leave (turned up to 80 or so) because he's worried about stuff overheating. Is this a valid concern? I know in the winter we want to leave the heat on so the pipes don't freeze. Should we be worried about anything overheating in the summer?

Re: Do you leave the AC on when you go on vacation?

  • We leave ours turned on around 80 also.  I don't know why, it's DH's idea.

Actually I think he just doesn't want it to be too hot when we get back.  It's regularly in the 100's around these parts.

    Shot first, questions later.
  • I usually just turn it up. My idiot brain is convinced my electronics will turn to mush if I leave them to roast while I'm gone.

  • I usually turn it off, but DH and I are both out of town right now and he set it to I think 85 before he left. We live in the south so it gets quite hot. I probably would have turned it off if I were the last one home but I'm sure I'll be thanking him when I get home in a few weeks and it's not 110* in my house.

  • I turn it off. I leave it at 80 during the week when we're home so the dogs don't croak. I don't see a reason to keep it at that when none of us are in it.

I always leave ours on so the cats don't get heatstroke. It stays at 80 all the time in the summer, regardless of where we are.

  • We leave ours on for the pets.  It's usually set at 80 when we are gone.  If the pets are with us, it's still set at 80 in the summer.
  • I leave mine on for the cats.

It is set at 70 degrees all summer.

  • Its set at 80 during the week and 82 when we are gone so that kitty face doesn't melt. Simon is generally with us when we are gone for a long time like vacation or a few days away so I don't have to worry about him.

  • We close all of the blinds and turn ours off. And even though it's crazy hot here our house is surrounded by trees that shade our home so it's not sweltering when we come back...and our electronics have always been fine.

When we're home we just leave it at a comfortable 80 to conserve energy and save money. We're cheap.

  • I would leave it at about 85. I've never lived (or left) when that would be an issue though. I've never leave a pet aline, so that's another issue I avoid. I just left my apt but it's hawaii which is cool plus no pets and it's a building with nominal central air.

  • We generally put it at 85 when we leave.

  • DH and I turned off the AC in our very first studio apartment when we went on vaca. It was for almost 3 weeks in the summer and when we came back the apartment was unbearable. None of the electronics were fried, but that night was torture. It took two days for the place to hit a normal temp.
