These tomato plants will produce or else!

I posted earlier in the week about toadstools in one of the large barrels that these are planted in.  Good advice, I just pick them out now.

NOW, I need more advice.  Sorry, I'm a rookie at raising tomatoes in NYC. (or anywhere else for that matter)

One plant is growing well, almost 4 feet high now with many green tomatoes and more yellow buds blooming.  The second one, in the same pot, has several green tomatoes but it's still very short,  It appears to be growing sideways rather than up. I did stake it earlier in the week but no change yet.

The other two plants have several budding tomatoes, and some yellow buds but it's not growing tall either.  I staked both of them.  Now, one has split and there are three seperate plants.

Does it matter if they grow close to the ground?  I'm snipping off the lower stems, no buds or tomatoes on them.

Have some pity on a rookie and tell me what to do next.

Re: These tomato plants will produce or else!

  • No, it doesn't matter.

I had a volunteer in my compost bed last year that I just let ride.  It crawled all over the ground and produced quite a few tomatoes before it got too big and unruly and I yanked it.

  • All of my roma tomato plants grew sideways and low to the ground for some reason.  They have a lot of blossoms and little green tomatoes starting.  So, IMO, it doesn't matter since it seems to be working out for mine!
