Runners - A whole bunch of questions
How do you keep it fun? Do you regularly set goals to stay motivated? And how do you keep from being so bored that you consider shutting of the treadmill to go fold laundry?
I have no marathon aspirations but I really do want to like running. I've been doing Couch to 5K and maybe I just haven't hit a level that was challenging enough... or maybe the program just isn't for me.
Re: Runners - A whole bunch of questions
I insisted that the treadmill be parked in front of the computer. I can't just run...I need something to take my mind off of it, or I am thinking about the pile or laundry. Right now, I'm watching the series Camelot on Netflix. So far, it is pretty good.
I'm only on week 1 of the C25K. I don't plan on ever running anything, so this is more just to give me a little more of a workout than walking on the treadmill. With my hip the way it is, I doubt I'll be able to run for half an hour. I have issues with is on week 1. But I'm going to keep at it until I can't. Also, I need a stress relief right now and this is better for me than drinking a bottle of wine a day...or taking up smoking.
Crazy Christmas Kids!
I used to love running, I hope my back someday heals enough that can get back into it. Running was my time to unwind after a long day at work. I could just zone out & not worry about what might be stressing me out.
But I could never run on the treadmill. I'd rather scrub laundry by hand & line dry & iron every single piece of it including underwear & bed sheets. If it was too hot to run outside I'd "run" on the elliptical instead. The treadmill just killed running for me so I stayed away from it completely.
I am also a very non-competitive athlete. So running in races never appealed to me at all, not even to try & set PR. For me running was about zoning out & relaxing in a healthy way (instead of turning to booze). Shortly before I hurt my back DH wanted to run a half marathon, so I agree to train with him. Worst.mistake.ever. It made running into a chore b/c I had to run certain distances on certain days, etc. I hated running during that time period. I think I'd feel the same way about the C25K program.
Since I established that my goal for running was healthy stress relief. I'd always just go outside, start jogging & see how the rest of the run went. Sometimes I'd end up going really far, other times really fast. If I ended up walking after the first 5 minutes, then fine, walking was still better than sitting on the couch. A lot of times I'd end up walking for however long & then doing random sprints to a certain mailbox down the road or something like that, walk for a few minutes then all-out-sprint again. I never kept a log of my running or timed myself either. I'd know in my head that I ran for 20 minutes on Monday & 45 minutes on Wednesday, but keeping anything official would have made it a chore for me, so I didn't do it.
I miss running.
How do you keep it fun? For the most part I really enjoy running and look forward to it. But there are times when it just sucks and I do it because I have to. Because the mileage is on my training plan and I like to eat.
Do you regularly set goals to stay motivated? I sign up for races that force me to train. Nothing like paying for a run to motivate you to keep up with the schedule.
And how do you keep from being so bored that you consider shutting of the treadmill to go fold laundry? I try to only use the treadmill for speed intervals. They keep my mind occupied, mostly with thoughts of not keeling over dead during the next 400m, 800m, whatever. And they make the time pass pretty quickly.
If I have to do longer or easier runs on the treadmill I like audiobooks. I can zone out at an easy pace and just let myself get into the book for however long I need to run.
C25K never worked for me, I didn't like doing the interval thing every day, I never completed it I just started going "let's see how far/long/fast I can run before I keel over dead today?" But I'm generally not good at following pre-set "plans" of any type.
I cannot run on a treadmill. I used to but I hated it and that was when I had a lot more motivation. For me, one of the biggest benefits to running outside is that you CAN'T QUIT IN THE MIDDLE. Honest, that's the real reason I run on the road because when you really want to quit after that first mile you can't because you're a mile away from your house/car, so you might as well keep going and finish the loop.
Sign up for some 5ks in the fall, they are great fun and really the best motivation for me, especially when I was just starting to run.
How do you keep it fun? RUN OUTSIDE! I do a regular run once a week, a tempo or set of intervals once a week and one long run a week.
Do you regularly set goals to stay motivated? Races for sure keep me motivated. I'm doing 12 races in 2012 and I'm so excited to start it's ridiculous
And how do you keep from being so bored that you consider shutting of the treadmill to go fold laundry? Like KrisB, the treadmill is only for speed work. I try to never go distance on it because I loathe it with every fiber of my being.
Also, if you find C25K isn't a great fit for you, Hal Higdon has a great beginner plan as wellj+k+m+e | running with needles
How do you keep it fun? I make new playlists all the time and find new routes. Even going at different times in the day. I like the peace of early morning, and the feel of running off the day's stress in the evening. And sometimes, it's just not fun.
Do you regularly set goals to stay motivated? I have to have goals. I am constantly training for something and each run I have "plans" (speed work, hills, certain paces, etc).
And how do you keep from being so bored that you consider shutting of the treadmill to go fold laundry? I could never run on a treadmill! So I have no advice there except go outside :P
The face of Kitty-Hate
How do you keep it fun? I didn't enjoy running when I started, but after doing it for a month or two it got addicting. It also helps that I run with people. I don't care what their pace may be, we adjust accordingly.
Do you regularly set goals to stay motivated? How I stay movtivated is by registering for races, so I just keep running because I want to beat my PR.
And how do you keep from being so bored that you consider shutting of the treadmill to go fold laundry? I don't run on a treadmill, but I would MUCH rather run than do laundry. Maybe if you run outside, you will have a change of scenery... I am not a big fan of treadmills, I have read literature where it isn't good for your gait.
They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
Sorry to hijack this forum, but I am new to this: (posting) and running. I am training with Houston Fit (VERY SLOWLY) for the Houston 1/2. I am interested in running some 5Ks. Can anyone recommend some fun ones in the end of summer/ fall?
Thanks!
How do you keep it fun? I try running new routes on a regular basis and making new goals. Although, in this heat... it's never fun. I run because I have to build up the miles before my half.
Do you regularly set goals to stay motivated? I always have a goal. Sometimes I don't make the goal but it always motivates me to try. Before a regular run, I will set up a group of goals so if I don't make one then maybe I can try for another. For instance, my main goal might be to run 6 miles at a certain pace. My second goal could be just to run the 6 miles and then maybe my third goal is to just run 3 miles but at a faster pace. That way, when I get through the first mile or so I'll know which goal is probably the best to go for.
And how do you keep from being so bored that you consider shutting of the treadmill to go fold laundry? I hate the treadmill (don't own one) so I always run outside. If I absolutely have to use the fitness center, the treadmill has a 30 minute limit which is about the max amount of treadmill time I can get through.

Here's a 5K that's going to be August 7th
That's also a good website to stalk for some smaller, cheaper races.
You can also find races on active.com and runnersworld.com - Luke's Locker & Fleet Feet have local parts of their websites that list local races as well.

training with a group will definitely help; it's such a great motivator!

I don't enjoy running, but I really enjoy finishing a run and knowing I've run. Does that make sense?
I dislike running on a treadmill, and I actually dislike running with music because I've found that it interferes with my natural rhythm. I run without music, usually early in the morning, and it's really nice to just let my mind GO without having to pay attention to anything else.
When I'm running, I can't be online, check e-mail, answer phones, be asked to do something for someone else, etc. It's a wonderful meditative time for me.
When I get to the point of being too tired or discouraged, I really honestly just think of the fact that my dad left life too early because of an unhealthy heart. I want to do everything in my power to not put my kids through that. I want to live and be old.
There are also other inspiring people... Matt Long and Anthony Robles are two that come to mind. It kind of pushes me when I think of people who have had it rough-- like, "If THEY could do this, then I should be able to").
I keep little goals in mind, like once in a while running a fun run. I don't run for time or anything, I just try and actually jog the whole thing with no walking. FOr me that's a huge accomplishment, because a few years ago I weighed 259 pounds and my goal for the year was to be able to run a mile. To run three was completely beyond belief for me.

I appreciate the advice. I've gotten to the point where I have to be in sensory overload (music + TV + ipad/magazine/something) to run for even short distances now. I used to put music on and go... 25 miles a week.
I've never been an outside runner... and July seems to be a pretty sucky time to start. Maybe I'll try to go early, before it's seventh circle of hell hot.

I could never run on a treadmill - that absolutely ruins running for me. The best part about running for me is to get outside and enjoy the different routes I can take. I really enjoy the scenery and the people watching. It was particularly fun when I was running farther distances preparing for the 1/2 marathon. You can't get that on a treadmill. It's just work at that point.
Agreed that July is a really sucky time to start running outside. If you do attempt it, plan on going slower and maybe not as far at first. The heat and humidity can really suck the strength out of you. Otherwise, I would wait until October to start running outdoors.
Click it if you can't say it!
I think this race is on August 13 this year. http://secure.eztoregister.com/search/event.aspx?event=547daa7b-35d4-47ca-a4ba-73b9adf48f41.aspx
And don't get discouraged if you run a slow 5K in August. DH and I ran the Dynamo 5K last weekend and it was awful - 2 mins. slower than my time 3 weeks earlier.
