Grocery shopping

What do you usually spend for a week of groceries for lunch and dinner for you and DH? I just went and I spent $60 for the week and that includes chicken cordon bleu an asparagus and pumpkin pie fixings for DH's birthday and having his parents over that day. Was just wordering if that seems average? Last week I think I spent about $50

Re: Grocery shopping

  • Do you mind if I ask what that includes? Meat at every meal, household items, alcohol, fresh veggies, organic etc?

We're trying to make our Dallas budget and this thread would be really helpful!

  • Well I'm in a small town about an hour south of Dallas, but I doubt that makes a huge drifferent in prices. Here is my menu for the week:

Monday - Vinison Burgers (already have the meat),buns, french fries (bought) baked beans (already had)

Tuesday - chicken fajitas - already had chicken, onion and bell pepper (bought) spanish rice (bought) already have cheese, tortillas, sour cream, and salsa

Wednesday - Chicken Cordon Bleu, asparagus, asparagus  - bought chicken, ham, swiss cheese, and heavy whipping cream, and 2 cans of asparagus in case DH's parents come over (sorry....but really hope they don't, I don't want to have to clean the house and all that crap). Had rice already.

Thursday - Going to Naan Sushi with friends for DH's birthday

Friday - grilled shark and grilled veggies - already had the shark that I caught in Galveston. Bought veggies for skewers (cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, squash, and cucumber)

Pumpkin pie filling and  evaporated millk

Also bought bread and lunch meat for sandwhiches, chips, and about 2 pounds of peaches for lunches

     Think that is about it.

ETA: No organic veggies that I was aware of, no house hold goods eithe.  Well I got a couple cleaning things at the Dollar Tree.

  • Thanks!  I thought about $100/week & it looks like I'm on track.
  • I spend about $150 per week but that is for a house of 3.  I buy a TON of fresh produce and only buy organic chicken, and grass fed beef.  Also, my mom and I usually eat the same thing but Matt does not so many nights I cook 2 meals.

Do you get your meat from a farmer or from the store? I'm looking into farms in the area that will do bulk orders (we have a chest freezer).

  • We spend about $150 a week but that can be more or less.  We sometimes go to Central Market for the good meat every two weeks or so and then buy all the other stuff every week.  Sometimes it's a little (or a bit) more if we have to buy non-edible household items like trash bags, cat litter, laundry detergent, etc.  If we're out of a lot of stuff then stocking up again drives up the bill.  We buy two containers of salad every week along with some different breads (naans, flatbreads) to have with dinner.  We also get snacky things (I like them) and things for me to take for lunch during the school year when I am working.  We generally go to Super Target but, like I said, we sometimes hit Central Market for some of their good meat.  We have been known to go to Market Street too.  They are one step below (barely) Central Market.  They have a to go deli very similar to CM but I don't think their butcher block is quite as good.  However, they do carry the name brands, like Kellogs, etc. that CM doesn't carry for the most part.

Some ladies like Sprouts but we would have to drive about 20 minutes for one of those so we haven't been in there.  I do know that a lot of people rave about Sprouts although I think shortgirl had some produce go bad pretty quickly this past week.

We get our meat from multiple sources.  There is a farm south of FW that we get some items from, the farmers market in Coppell and also Market Street and Whole foods.

We just joined a CSA called Urban Acres. It's $50 for a full share every other week or $30 (I think for a half share). They also have a store in Oak Cliff and I'm pretty sure they'll order meat in bulk for you.

    Awesome!

And sorry I hijacked your thread MrsLynch!

  • Between $40-100, depending on what we need. And that includes everything like non-food items as well.

  • Our bill is between $60-150 depending on how much we have SD that week.  If we have her more the bill is higher because we have to buy lunches and snacks for school and make more food at dinner.  I buy fresh fruit and a few fresh veggies every week too.

  • We spent $77 yesterday at Kroger and $3.97 at Sams and only saved $36 with coupons.  This covers breakfast and dinner; next week I'll be having to figure out lunch- it'll probably be leftovers since all the recipes usually serve 4 but I may choose to do something else.

At Kroger we got a bunch of veggies (bell peppers, cauliflower, tomatoes, avocado, mango, brussel sprouts, red onions) for our meals this week, 2 lb of flank steak, 1 lb of top sirloin steak, roasted red peppers, 3 containers of milk (Almond/Coconut/Health Right), 2 things of toothpaste, 3 bottles of body wash, crazy expensive jelly and several other things.

At Sams, I get a 1 lb container of spinach for my green monsters and that lasts about a week.

I love Sprouts but it's just not my friend.  I've never had much luck with their produce but I imagine the heat had something to do with my zucchini problem.

We let our Sam's membership lapse so this makes me wistful to read. I sometimes miss spending an hour wandering around Sam's.

I generally spend about $35 a week on groceries, this is usually only produce, milk, bread and other perishables for myself for the week. Unfortunately, DH eats complete crap, so I get most of his stuff free/cheap with coupons. My total is higher if meat is a good price and I am stocking up. I rarely spend much of anything on non-food items as those are usually free/very cheap with coupons.

  • We spend about $150, but it normally last for a couple of weeks.  We spend around $200 when we go to Costco which is about once a month or 5 weeks.  That is more than food though (things like paper plates, cups, water filters, paper towels).  I need to start meal planning because we always seem to do good on meals for a week and then I never sure what to cook.
  • We normally spend $50-$60 a week on food.

MrsLynch- Where are you from? I'm about an hour south of Dallas too!

  • Our grocery bill seems to bounce all over the place.  We had been shopping at Aldi to see how much of a difference it made, and it did (about $35/week), but the quality of the food is pretty low, so we've switched between Target/Walmart/Central Market.  Y'all are right about the CM meat, it is really great, and they have marinated chicken breasts which make meal planning easier.  I would say we spend about $100/wk including non-food items.

We have recently signed on to Emealz to help with our portion control.  It's about $5/month, and depending on the type of meal plan you choose (portion control, gluten free, low-calorie, etc) it sends you a weekly grocery and recipe list.  I am going to substitute a few things like ground turkey instead of beef and baby spinach instead of regular lettuce, but overall it seems like a good plan.  Here's the website if anyone wants to check it out.... www.e-mealz.com

  • Yesterday I went and spent $100 something but this was low.  If you counted all the little times I have to go pick up something during the week plus my shopping trip on Sunday, we probably spend $150-$200 a week and I can't for the life of me figure out how to spend less.  But, we do have a teenager, although she doesn't eat that much.

I wish I could pay you to do my grocery shopping (and related couponing) for me!  I think I'd still come out ahead :)

    Hee, thanks!

Leslie $35 are you serious??  I have GOT to start couponing!

Oh and on a totally unrelated topic for you  Bachelorette lovers--Ben found out that Ashley Hebert's sister (the one she gets into a big fight with tonight) is an extreme couponer.  She's been on the show and everything.

Haha - thanks! It takes some time to do it this way but it's worth it in the end. I have found that it is better for me to coupon in cycles as it is easy to get burnt out chasing deals all the time. I am to the point now where we have enough deodorant, toothpaste, body wash, female products etc. to last us for at least six months. I haven't actually bought any of that for some time and can be picky about the stuff I coupon for (our favorite brands, etc.) I figure when we get down to a month supply or so I will start ramping back up. :)

RE: Ashley's sister - that's crazy. It kills me how some families seem to be magnets for being on reality TV.
