So annoyed with couch shopping
We are in desperate need of a new couch. Our current one is 16 years old and has needed to be replaced for several years. We've hit Star Furniture, Bassett, Rooms to Go and La-Z Boy and while we have found a few that will work, I am not crazy about any of them. Of course I think the prices are high but that could be because I'm not in love with them. This totally sucks.

I am with you on this. I went on Friday and it's just frustrating. And when I do find something that I would really like, it would be WAYYY over priced.
I did find that you do NOT go upstairs at Star Furniture. Stuff on the first floor is pretty reasonable.. second floor, HEART ATTACK city! Sat on one really nice sectional, thought "oooh I would like this"... then looked at the price tag.... $10K !!??!! Yeah.. guess who went back downdstairs!
I agree - I have tried to go several times because our couch is slouching in the middle. I feel like you have to spend an arm and a leg to get something with sturdy construction. But if i'm spending $5k on a couch it had better last until Maddie goes off to college - and the ones with sturdy construction just don't "do it" for me.
I want something with stylized lines in a classic but not grandma style with a chenille ribbed fabric and a very strong sturdy base that won't slouch in 5 years.

We almost bought a sectional at IKEA but then we found one we really liked at Star that wasn't super expensive. We had a really hard time finding a sectional that was small enough for our tiny 1950s living room. All the furniture (especially sectionals) is GIGANTIC.
how large of a couch are you looking for?
there are a number of furniture outlets in houston, is that something you might be interested in?
we got ours at la z boy probably 6 or 7 years ago. it's a large sofa w/chaise at the end, i think it was the Daphne style.
the furniture at macy's and dillard's will go on sale from time to time, at which point the prices aren't as bad.

I have bought a microsuede couch and a leather chair at Macys (Foleys for the couch) and both have/are holding up really well...even now with a toddler. The couch was bought in 2002 and cost 900 bucks. It has held up really well, only now is the stuffing in the back cushions starting to go, but it's not sagging in the middle or anywhere else and I think I can restuff the cushions and easily get 5 more years out of it. The leather chair was purchased in 2005 and we got a great deal on it. It was originally 2k and with Macy's sales we ended up getting it for 500 bucks. It has also held up very well. I would go check them out and if you find something you like wait for one of their sales and then add the coupon on top of that...we also opened a Macy's card at the time of purchase for the leather chair to save even more $$$.
Have you tried Bassett Funiture? They have some nice couches in a huge variety of styles and you get to select your fabric.
The thing with couch-buying is that there is such a huge difference in quality and style between a $500 couch and a $900 couch. We spent around $850 on our couch 5 years ago and it still looks new, supportive cushions, no sagging, etc. When you look at a couch, feel the backside of the couch. If it isn't firm, just fabric stretched over the back with nothing behind it, that's a huge sign that the sofa isn't well-made and won't last.
ETA: I don't feel the need to spend thousands on a couch. I don't want to be stuck with something I spent a fortune on in case I change my mind and DEFINITELY don't want to have DH saying that we can't buy a new couch because we spent thousands on the one we have.
We needed a large sectional, but couldn't find any going the "right" way that we needed it to. All of them were long on the wrong side. We ended up buying a couch, loveseat, and oversized chair that all had low armrests, and we made our own sectional. People can't even tell they are separate pieces.
I agree that couch shopping is a PITA. Same with bedding. We spent forever looking for something we liked to register for our wedding.
If I had lotso' money I would have gone to High Fashion Home. You may want to check their clearance floor. They have gorgeous pieces for excellent prices.
That being said, since I am ballin' on a budget, I got my mod mid century style sofa at Macys and am super happy with it. With delivery it was under $800 on sale.
Also, you can find amazing deals on Craigslist especially if you like Crate and Barrel or West Elm furniture.
Good luck on your search! I LOVE shopping for furniture.
