St. Paul trash haulers - need rec

Hi all - I have been using Waste Management to do trash pick up at my house in St. Paul since I bought it in 2006.  They keep doing this song and dance about ratcheting up rates for no apparent reason - I call other providers to get quotes to prove that they're out of line with their pricing, I call them with the competitors quotes and they re-set the bill back to where it was pre-price hike.  I'm just tired of dealing with it and am looking for a new company.

Does anyone "love" their trash hauler?  Who do you use?  I have yet to find a published list anywhere online that shows all the providers approved to haul in St. Paul (that would be too easy I guess!) so I'm sure there are companies I'm not aware of who serve the area.

TIA!

Re: St. Paul trash haulers - need rec

  • Not sure of their service area but we use Troje's Trash service out of Inver Grove Heights.  We used them when we lived in S. St.Paul and still use them in the south metro.  We have been nothing but happy with them.
  • We use Krupenny & Sons Disposal Service651-451-9998.  We've had them for a little over a year and haven't had any problems.  My parents and grandma know them and they're good people.

If they don't serve your area, you could check this list. http://www.eurekarecycling.org/PDFS/Volume_Based_Garbage.pdf

Here's my perspective on it, from someone whose family has been in the business for a long time.  I would stick with the locally owned companies like Troje's, Krupenny, etc.  They survived an overhaul in the system in the 90's that put a lot of the small companies out of business so the national ones could prosper.  The local companies are going to pride themselves on giving good customer service, good prices and being flexible to the extent they can (you wouldn't believe how many government agencies regulate the industry).  I know trash haulers don't get a ton of respect but the local places really do put their hearts and souls in their companies and take pride in what they do.

  • We're in Brooklyn Park now and use Walters. They were super friendly when we called to set up the service, and we have no complaints yet? I dunno, we bring out the bins, they come pick up our garbage, leave the bin and we're good to go ;)  I might have a different opinion if they screw with our rates in the future.

Looks like Walters is an option in St Paul too. FYI- here's the list I found on the St Paul website. http://www.stpaul.gov/DocumentView.aspx?DID=14276

On a related note- Growing up, the city just handled the garbage collection for everyone. I do not understand how garbage works here.  It makes no sense to me to have 6 companies drive the same route every day. It seems like such a waste of resources.

  • Tennis Sanitation - they have always been really easy to work with.
    Anniversary BabyFruit Ticker
  • We're using Aspen and have been happy so far.  Prior to switching to Aspen, we we're using Allied Waste and their rates increased on every bill.
  • We're in W. St Paul and use Veiola.   We pay about $70 every 3 months... so about $23/month.  This does also include a small fee for recycling, so you might get it for less in St. Paul as I believe recycling is provided free by the city in St. Paul.  Also, they have different price points for the size of container you have - I guess depending on how much trash you regularly have?  Our price point is for the medium sized recepticle, so again, your price could be cheaper if you used a smaller recepticle.

We use Veolia as well, and we pay about 55 for 3 months. We have the medium can. We picked them becuase our neighbors use them and then there are less garbage trucks hauling down our alley.
  • We use Highland Sanitation and have had no problems with them at all. They are always very nice. And they are pretty cheap. About $17-$18 a month. I like too that they bill monthly. I think you can choose your billing cycle too - monthly, quarterly, etc.

  • Thanks everyone!  I have some researching to do!

FWIW, as convenient as city wide trash pickup would be, I think I prefer the current system of competition.  It probably keeps prices in check!  It might save a little wear and tear on the alleys but overall, I think a little healthy competition for business is a good thing.
