Individual health insurance -- maternity coverage?
Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out a plan for DH and I (we're both self-employed) that includes maternity coverage. We're in Maryland. Any suggestions on where to look or which companies to follow up with?
Thank you!!
Re: Individual health insurance -- maternity coverage?
Generally private plans do not cover maternity or only so do with a rider on top of a base plan that is very expensive and then they have a waiting period for maternity benefits to kick in. Some states prevent insurers from doing it that way, but I don't know if MD is one of them. I would look at ehealthinsurance.com (an online broker) or speak with private policies insurance broker. The Business Benefits Group in Fairfax, VA offered such services last time I checked, but I don't know if they are licensed to sell policies in MD (though I think they are). If you are both self-employed with by a single company of your own, you may be able to get a group policy. Again, I recommend speaking to a broker. I cannot remember if the employee min. is 2 or 3.
Thanks for your input and ideas, ladies. DH suggested that we may want to just pay out of pocket, since any complications are covered. DH owns a small business but doesn't provide HC now... so he may have to start offering it since it would benefit us greatly. It seems crazy to me that individuals cannot get maternity coverage. Thanks
