Intro?

Hi Ladies,

I don't post over here normally but I am guess I am feeling a little compelled today. I have been with my BF, Z, for a little over 3 months. He is a LT in the USAFR. He just called to tell me that he has to go to officer training for a month or more later on this year in addition to his annual tour in September. I guess am feeling a little overwhelmed by all of this. From the get go in our relationship he warned me of the committment that this was and kept saying "I don't think you understand what this is" due to the trainings, weekends, possible deployment, etc. Maybe I didn't, who knows. I guess there really isn't a point to this post other than to get these feelings out as well as say "hi" to everyone. Sorry to be a debbie downer!

Re: Intro?

  • Hi and welcome!

I'm A, DH was AD Marine Corps for 5 years and is coming up on his 2 year separation anniversary here in the next week or so.

Being a spouse or SO of a service member can be challenging but also rewarding. You might not know what your in for now but after this training and his tour you'll start to see if your cut out for this or not. A big key is a lot of patience and keep communications open.  Good luck to you!

  • Welcome to the board. :-) MH is USAF. I've heard that a lot of reserve units have been getting activated recently. It can certainly be stressful. If you can keep a positive attitude, it will really help you cope with the new changes. I hope you stick around, these girls here are pretty great.

    Annual tour or annual training?

If I am understanding him correctly, he has to do his annual 2 weeks then do an additional 4-5 weeks of officer training like a month or two later.

  • Hi! My husband is AD Navy. We started dating 3 weeks before he received his acceptance letter. I don't come from a military family so I was very naive about what I was getting into and some days were and some days still are very overwhelming.

For me I'm a planner,I like to know what's going on - so the best thing for me was to have him write down every step of his training, the duration of his training, and where it would be located.  He just got new orders so I'll have him do this again for our next phase as well. It's sometimes easier to look at a calendar than to be flooded with information in a single phone call. That way you can truly take it one day at a time.

    All the best!

  • Your relationship is new and he won't be gone that long in the grand scheme of things.  Definitely just take it slow.
