another stupid baby question

do you think we'll get any use out of sleepers? I washed the NB clothes last night and we have about half a dozen cotton sleepers. Maybe at night in the AC?

We have about the same in 0-3, and 4 or 5 of those gowns deals too, but since they'll only be 2 mo old in October I can see using those a lot assuming they're not giant babies.

It doesn't REALLY matter since we returned all the stuff we had receipts for, but I'm just curious (and turning into one of those crazy mom people...)

Re: another stupid baby question

  • I don't think your baby questions are stupid!  I had my fair share as a new mom :)

I think you you will.  There are some summer nights that tend to get a bit cool.  What if you guys go somewhere one evening near their bed time?  It will be nice to have them in something comfy that you can just put them down in when you get home.

Plus having half a dozen with two babies isn't bad at all!  You might pack them all for one night out if you have babies who tend to spit up.

My SIL said they loved the gowns or zippered sleepers for midnight diaper changes. No snapping. But, the twins were born in December, so I'm not sure how that weighs in.

  • I don't think six for two babies is excessive, although you may never use them. Because of the heat, Eli has been sleeping in onesies (and then swaddled). He didn't wear one sleeper when he fit into 0-3 (which wasn't long), and I don't think he'll wear any of his 3-6 either. Together, that's about 25 sleepers never worn!

  • I think you will use them, even with the heat, because babies can't regulate their body temperature on their own. Mostly Norah wore onsies during the day, but she slept in a gown or sleeper most nights.

  • I think so.  We had M in sleepers pretty much until she outgrew her newborn clothes.  It was just easier with her constant diaper changes (she pooped every nursing).  She was a March baby, so in the early days it was chilly outside and then when it got warmer we had the A/C on indoors, so we used the sleepers for sleeping.  I still to this day use the fleece Carter's sleepers for her to sleep in year round.  In the summer b/c of the central air and in the winter, because it's cold out.

  • We used them every night for the first almost year, I'd bet.

Remember, too, P was born in July, and he was a hot kid, and we don't have central air.  He may have just had a diaper and t shirt on underneath, but we did use them a lot.

ETA: He would not stay swaddled, so this was our alternative.  Had he liked being swaddled, we probably wouldn't have used them in the summer, but most likely would have in the winter (when we used fleece ones).

  • OK. I love you guys. They're cotton and my parents keep the house pretty cold, so maybe we will use them in the evenings. Good point about going out at night too...it could, theoretically though its hard to imagine right now, be in the 60s in the evening in early September. I always forget about the body heat regulation thing too. Can you tell if they're cold? I'm starting to have heart palpitations about them coming in 2.5 weeks Stick out tongue

I think you feel their chest to assess body temp. Don't rely on how their extremities feel - feet/legs are normally cooler to the touch, but if their chest area is super hot/cool that is how you know their core temp needs help. I think. I'm sure a real mom can chime in :-)

This is the textbook answer. Babies are also good at fussing when they aren't comfortable.  You really do just figure it out on the job, all of you are going to be great moms (and you all already ARE moms - so none of this "real mom" stuff, Claire!) :)
