Hand, Foot & Mouth

Both of my kiddos have HF&M - any tips?  For those of you with experience - does it truely take 5 days for it to run it's course (per the pedi).  I'm just trying to figure out this week in terms of them missing daycare/DH and I staying home.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!!

Re: Hand, Foot & Mouth

  • I *think* once the fever is gone they are no longer contagious. That's what I go by and my girls have not gotten it, but both little guys I watch(ed) have had it.
  • Oh no!  Never experienced it, but I saw a sign at daycare that it is there.  Better hear symptoms from others so I know what to look for!

At our house it has been a high fever, lack of appetite, rash on body (but not on hands nor feet).  I took Drake to the pedi today and he has the lesions on his throat.  My biggest indicator was the high fever (103+) for more than 48 hrs.

Oh, wow- good to know.  Can you see the lesions in the mouth/throat area?  Or are they too far back?  I will make sure to keep the temp in mind also.  Thanks and hope your kiddos feel better soon!

  • I honestly hadn't even looked for them as we've never dealt with HF&M before, so it didn't even cross my mind.  However, now that I think about it Gabby does have a sore on her lip, but I just thought she scratched herself.

How long have the signs been up in Johnston?  I didn't see any in Urbandale...

  • C just got over HF&M last week.  He had a mild case and never had a fever with it.  We started out thinking it was diaper rash (though it seemed odd he was getting diaper rash since he never does and cream was not helping at all), then a day later he got 2 little blisters on his hand.  He never had sores in his mouth but did have a few little dots down the backs of his legs.  The pedi told us 3-5 days and since he exhibited symptoms 1 day before we took him to the doctor and it was mild, he went back to daycare at day 4.  All of the blisters had healed and the spots had dried up and cleared.

This can be really painful, if the kiddos have sores in their mouths.  You can give them a few drops of glyoxide to help sooth the discomfort.  It's available at Walgreens over the counter in the tooth care section.  Just put a few drops in their mouth, it should kind of foam up and cool their blisters.

Good luck, hopefully it will clear up fast!

  • its definitley going around... one boy at our daycare had/has it.  i called the pedi when daycare called me and what they told me is that usually the first thing you notice is a high fever and sometimes (not always) they get the sores on the hands/throats, feet, mouth.  they said once the fever breaks they are not contagious and can go back to daycare.  it's a virus and the open sores are not contagious (just gross looking).  they said the biggest thing with sores in mouth is to make sure they stay hydrated...if they won't drink then you might need to bring them in...otherwise if they are managing okay (it is painful so you might give tylenol) then just let it ride out...pedi said the sores can be there for 10 days sometimes.  if the fever is gone they are okay to go back to daycare.  good luck!
  • drew (2yrs) had only the mouth symptoms -- he wasn't eating at all, fever, cranky, then i took him to the pedi and there were all of these lesions in the back of his throat and cheeks.  i didn't even think to check his mouth!  HF & M seemed to hang over his daycare for a couple of months, and he had symptoms twice.  he returned to daycare after the 4th day, plenty of time for the fever to settle, but he was so cranky with not eating or sleeping well, that we kept him home an extra day.  popsicles and TLC were his best medicine :) i hope your kids begin to feel better soon, and i understand the stress in having to stay home and figure that all out day by day :(

  • Derek had hfm last week and it was going around daycare the week before.  I read it can take 3-7 days for symptoms to show up.  Derek's fever wasn't too high, around 101-102 and he has some sores in his mouth.  He was fussier than normal and wasn't too interested in eating, but the pedi said to make sure to stay hydrated.  Things like milk and water are easier for them to drink than juice due to the acid.

I ended up getting hfm also.  I had a fever of 104.4 on Friday and ended up going to the ER because I couldn't get my temp to drop.  The next day I had horrible sores in the back of my throat, a bad headache and body aches.  Food didn't sound good at all to me and I just kept drinking water.  I'm feeling a lot better today, but still pretty tired.
