Work closing - advice?

I've been told that my job will be closing in about September (I could potentially have my job through mid-November to help with the close out.) It's myself and my boss.

I feel AWFUL about looking for a new job right now. I love my job intensely. I know that what we do is amazing and helps the community. Yet, I know that we're closing. BUT - if I DO find a new job, its just my boss left to do everything, and if I do find a new job and leave, all the families that I work with now and support (in many a myriad of ways) will be left high and dry. (Which....come September they will anyways. Between now and then, I'm making recc's to different community resources that can support them once we're gone.)

...what would you do? Stick it out til September and look for a job once closed (or look for a job but let them know you can't start til Sept?)

OR

say "its not my problem what happens..." and look for a new job and leave if one is offered?

Re: Work closing - advice?

  • I don't know what you do, but is it possible to look for jobs now and if you get an interview to just tell them you cant start till X date.  I am in the same situation my co-workers are going on vacation in August so I have to make it clear I cant start till Sept, because it is not fair to the company.  I had an interview and they seemed to respect that.

  • September is *right* around the corner. Give them a start date after this job ends. And hit the pavement. Now.

Agreed. September is only 6 weeks away. I don't know what kind of work you have, but the process of polishing your resume, finding jobs to apply for, first, second, possibly even more interviews, and beginning the new job could easily take 6 weeks.

This, and, in my world, August is THE slowest month of the year to recruit, since so many managers end up taking vacation, and we assume candidates do, too.

  • I've been in this exact same situation. It took me 6 months to find a new job from the time I found out about the closing. Wich was 3 months after we actually closed. Start looking now.

  • Start looking NOW.  If you get an offer, I'd give your standard 2-week notice and call it good.  Ultimately your first loyalty needs to be to yourself.  In this job market you can't afford to turn down an opportunity because you need to close out a few extra weeks at your old job, especially when they're laying you off anyway.

  • I would start looking now. I wished I started to look earlier than I did. You don't know what's out there, what could be out there now and may not be there later. It's also right around the corner.

  • I'm going to parrot what all the pps said. It's an employers market out there right now; time is NOW to start spreading your resume and network, network, network EVERYWHERE you go! Even getting an interview can be tough in this market...good luck and go knock 'em dead!

Seriously.  From the submission of my application to the first day at my job was over 5 weeks.  That's almost September already.  And of course, before that, I spent a solid YEAR sending out my r?sum?/cover letter and applying for jobs every single day.  You should get moving on this like yesterday.  If something comes up sooner, then make it clear when you can start (and why), but it's very possible that if you start looking now, you won't have found something by September.

  • I felt the same way when the company I worked for closed.  I loved it there, loved everything about it.  But facts are facts, it is ending, and you will not find a new job and start at it right away.

I started sending out resumes 6 months before I found this job.  And it took over 6 weeks to get hired here, from first resume mailing to actually being offered the job.  It takes time for them to do the interview process, call people back for the second, then check references, etc.  And when I was offered the job, I couldn't even start for 2 more weeks, because of people being out of the office and paperwork that had to be done on my end.

Get started now!  Don't waste any time getting your name out there.  And if something comes your way, don't worry about the company that you are at now.  Quite frankly, as cold as it sounds, they aren't worried about you feeding your family are they?  Worry about you and what you will need to pay the mortgage.  I know it sounds horrid to say that, but its the truth.
