Do you have one? If so is it vinyl, aluminum or wood? How long have you had it? What do you like/dislike about it? Is it on the front or back door? How often do you leave the interior door open and just use the storm door? Has it helped with insulation?
Have you had one in the past? If so, what were the pro's and con's? Add answers to the info above.
Realtors - do storm doors add to/detract from the value in a home? If it depends, what are the circumstances for either side?
I think I want to put a storm door on the back door. It will help me feel better about M playing outside alone. Also, I would like better sealing on that door (think insulation and the mouse issue from a couple of weeks ago). I read that a mouse can fit through a pencil-sized crack in the door. Ick. We have a gap. I asked DH to tackle the weather stripping but I just want added assurance that the door is closed TIGHTLY.
Re: Let's talk storm doors
We had them when I was a kid, but I can't speak to them from a homeowner standpoint.
I will say that as a buyer, it makes no difference to me whatsoever if a house has a storm door(s) on the front, back, both, neither. I am looking at so much more and that probably isn't even really going to catch my eye as a positive or negative, much less be a deal breaker.
They don't make a difference in value. It's not that expensive of an upgrade. Some people like them, others hate them. They are easy enough to remove if someone doesn't want it.

Do you have the aluminum kind or vinyl? I was reading that if they have much direct sun the aluminum can cause the main wood door to warp. Our back door is a steel door, I think, so that shouldn't be an issue. But I also don't want it to be hot to the touch.
Also, I think I'd like to eventually put one on the front door because I like the light our current door lets in, but not the lack of privacy. So I think I want to put in a solid wood door and then use the storm door for when Maddie is playing with her friend(s) in the front yard(s) and the neighbor is the one watching our kids (they run back and forth between houses and we take turns regarding who has to watch them).
Do you think they add to your insulation?

They are solid glass but have a white metal frame. So they definitely don't offer any privacy. I haven't noticed any sort of warp to the front door and our house faces west. Our back door is a steel door. They don't add to our insulation all that much since they still let all the light in, but I still love having them.

we have one now. it is aluminum i believe. it's maroon (accident, i meant to buy beige, but the maroon actually looks really nice) with a giant clear plexiglass panel, so it just kind of frames the door. i bought it at home depot to install when DH was refinishing the door.
it's on the front door, i love it. i like being able to have the door wide open for he animals to look out or sunbathe, and i love having a barrier against solicitors.
it seals tightly. i like that it locks, because i don't want anyone walking into my house but enjoy having the wooden door open, especially when the kids are running around outside or i know someone is coming over.
i like that it closes automatically, too. no chance for escape artist animals to fly out the front door! if you are bringing heavy stuff in the door, you can prop it open and not have to worry about it shutting on you.
it also protects our pretty wood door from the weather.
i adore the fact that if there is a huge moth or somethign flying around on the front porch, i can see it before i open the wooden/leaded glass door...lol.
and if your dumb child or husband walks into the door, you can tease them about their forehead grease spot on the big clear door, hehehee.

We have one on the front door; it's aluminum. We used to have one on the back door too but the gas shock on it broke and we just took it off. It came with the house and looks like it's been here a while.
Pro: I like that it protects our front door from the elements
Cons: I don't like that it obscures the door (basically, your eye is drawn to the storm door rather than the actual front door), and that it tries to swing shut when I'm trying to open the door which is a pain in the ass when my hands are full. And I think it's ugly.
I am trying to convince H to remove the storm door on the front, and either move it to the back if it will fit there, or get a new one for the back. I would like to be able to see inside the house more easily if I'm grilling on the deck and Ian's playing inside, or see him playing outside w/o having to have the back door wide open. I don't know, though, if I want one with screens and glass or just glass. It would be nice to have the screens for circulation in the spring and fall when it's too hot to run the heat but too cool to run the AC, or if the power went out.
I've heard they can be bad for your door if it's painted a dark color, but I don't know how true that is.
When my mom got one, she had to get a new handle set on her front door too because it stuck out too far and the storm door wouldn't close. She got it because she had little overhang over the front door and her first door rotted from water splashing up and her second door was starting to rust from it (were fiberglass doors an option in the late 80s?)
I don't feel comfortable leaving my front door open, even with a locking storm door, so a front storm door is of no use to me. I just don't feel safe even though that's slightly irrational. I also don't like feeling like everyone can see me.
I would like to have one on the back door, with a screen option to hear the kids better and keep the cats in, but when the back door is open, it blocks the MB door, so I won't have one there either.
