Nesties who run... come on in...

So, I'm not athletic and have never been athletic but I've decided to do the Couch to 5k program. DH has offered to do it with me, which is probably a good thing because, in addition to not being a runner, I'm also not a morning person ;) and that's when we're planning to run.

I have some questions though, and while I've been able to Google most things, I feel like some of them might be better answered by you gals. If any of you can give me your answers to them, I'd be incredibly appreciative.

1) What style/brand of underwear do you/most people wear while running? I'm very worried that whatever it is will wind up being a thong if it doesn't start out that way, if-you-know-what-I-mean, or else will wind up rubbing things the wrong way.

2) I read something on a website mentioning some sort of chafing cream. If chafing a common problem you should do something to prevent or is it more of a problem you deal with if you find it occurs? And where are we talking about here? Is there something I should know?

3) Any advice/tips/things I may not have thought of that you can clue me into? I remember reading some joke (cracked.com?) article about running that terrified me with talk of bowel issues and bloody nipples. I assume these are problems for real runners and not people simply working up to running 5k, but ya never know what you don't know, so any heads-ups are appreciated. ;)

TIA!!!

Re: Nesties who run... come on in...

  • Awesome! I started with Couch 2 5K and now run half marathons (well taking a break on the half distance for a few months.. but will go back).

    1) I just wear running shorts that have the built in underwear. Sounds weird, but much better than wearing something else. You'll get used to it ;)

    2) I dont think you will experience much chafing when running a 5K, but if you do.. get Body Glide. I usually use it around my bra straps and between my thighs for my half marathons. I use it only for races if the distance is short. I dont think this is really going to be a big issue for you in the beginning though.

    3)  Even when I ran a marathon, I didn't have any problems with chaffing that caused me to bleed. Now bathroom issues... thats another thing entirely and I think every runner has at least one bad run where they wished they were near a bathroom.

My best advice is to get fitted for running shoes and wear a good sports bra.

  • 1. I just wear regular underwear.  I know a lot of girls go commando, but I just can't do it.  There is special wicking underwear if you get truly serious about it.

    2. Chafing is a common problem for some/most people.  I always get it (possible TMI alert) on the top of my inside thigh, probably from rubbing against said regular underwear.  There are a number of products, but the most common is BodyGlide, available at any running or sporting goods store.

    3. I think with a 5K distance there aren't a ton of things to watch out for.  I have trouble eating anything but bananas before I run.  Even water is NOT good with my stomach, which is why I'll probably always be limited to shorter distances.  You'll have to experiment with various combinations of food/water/etc to figure out what works for you.

  • 1) I wear cotton underwear. I sometimes wore a thong but if I am running more than 6+ miles, I prefer undies.. There is special wicking undies but they are not worth the $$ imo.

    2) Yes, Body Glide. I put it everywhere even if I ran 3 miles. I doubt you will get it but everyone is different. When I ran my 1/2 marathon, I got butt chafing. Good lord that hurt.

    3) Luckily I have not had any bathroom issues. Before a race, I do get nervous and I have to pee so that is my only problem. Some advice, try to go poo before you leave for your run/race. Coffee helps with that. Having to go poo before/during a long run or a race with no bathroom in site, is not a fun thing.

and like T said-definitely get fitted for shoes and a good sports bra. They are worth the $$$.

  • Body Glide may seem $$$ to some but vaseline works well too to prevent chafing. I've gotten chaffing on my thighs, stomach and bra straps...never bloody nipples (that typically happens to guys).

I wouldn't drink a coke or coffee before you run and since you're running in the morning, make sure you are hydrated from the previous day.

I also second getting fitted for running shoes.

  • 1) What style/brand of underwear do you/most people wear while running?  I can only run in a thong, so...that's what I run in! I prefer tighter bottoms such as running tights, capri's and I even rock biker short style shorts now! I learned to embrace spandex (breathable, moisture wicking is key!)

    2) I read something on a website mentioning some sort of chafing cream. If chafing a common problem you should do something to prevent or is it more of a problem you deal with if you find it occurs? And where are we talking about here? Is there something I should know? You're thinking of Body Glide. I usually don't chafe much unless on longer runs, but Body Glide works wonders for chafing (If I chafe, I chafe along my sports bra front, under arm, and thighs if my shorts aren't long enough.

    3) Any advice/tips/things I may not have thought of that you can clue me into? I remember reading some joke (cracked.com?) article about running that terrified me with talk of bowel issues and bloody nipples. I assume these are problems for real runners and not people simply working up to running 5k, but ya never know what you don't know, so any heads-ups are appreciated. ;)I've never worried about cracked nips or BM while on a run. However...I do have a routine when training for runs that make sure I have about an hour before I start my run to, uh, make things regular, KWIM? Oh, and I drink about a cup of coffee or so before my runs, because I drink coffee every morning and it helps with that, too!

My advice is to make sure you get fit for shoes. Go to a local running specialty store and have them fit you. Makes a world of difference!

Also...don't worry about speed. Just get out there and be proud of yourself for doing it!

  • 1) I run in shorts that have the underwear lining and I love them. I'm sure if you have tighter undies, it will work just as well.

    2) I've never had a problem with chaffing, but my boss that runs 4 miles every morning says that KY jelly works better than anything else he's tried on the market. I giggle when he says that, but he swears by it. But I've also heard that BodyGlide works well too, and may be less embarrassing.

    3) I haven't run long enough distances to have any poopy problems yet, but I know that it does happen. if it's early enough in the morning, you may not have the problems. If you run consistently at the same time, your body will adapt.

Everyone is spot on about the running shoes. I used cross trainers and blistered all the time. Then I finally bit the bullet and went to get shoes for me and my style of running, a WORLD of difference.

Two good spots in the East Bay are Transport in Rockridge/Oakland and Athletic Outpost in Walnut Creek.

  • Thanks everyone!

  • Go you!!

    1) What style/brand of underwear do you/most people wear while running? I'm very worried that whatever it is will wind up being a thong if it doesn't start out that way, if-you-know-what-I-mean, or else will wind up rubbing things the wrong way.

I only ever wore bikini brief cotton underwear.

    2) I read something on a website mentioning some sort of chafing cream. If chafing a common problem you should do something to prevent or is it more of a problem you deal with if you find it occurs? And where are we talking about here? Is there something I should know?

I didn't need anything until I ran my first 5 miler, so you might be okay.  Body Glide can also help with blisters and stuff too though, so for longer runs (or if you feel your shoes are rubbing in a certain area), you can glide your feet to prevent those and that's a good thing.

If you do end up chafing at all, I SWEAR by Monistat Chafing relief gel.  It's available at Target or on Amazon for cheap.  It is absolutely dreamy.  I've been using it a ton while pregnant too.  I just love that stuff.

    3) Any advice/tips/things I may not have thought of that you can clue me into? Get fitted for good shoes.  If you need a few days to recover from an injury, take those days to recover from the injury!  Don't let the "program" you're on push you into further injury.  It's just not worth it.  If you can get some advice on correct form (maybe when you get your shoes?), that could really help you avoid injury.  Hydrate hydrate hydrate!  Have fun!! :)

  • Thanks, Stef :)

The running shoe stores all close before we get home from work and we both need shoes so we're gonna wait for this weekend and start next week. But we bought iPhone/Droid armbands, downloaded the C25k app, and started figuring out our route so I'm feeling good about it!
