dresses near 19th and L NW

I want to shop for a dress for a wedding I'm attending in Dallas this weekend, and I have about an hour each day during lunch to look. Anyone recommend a place near 19th and L that would have cute dresses? I'm a size 12, so places like Ann Taylor might not have my size :( I think Filene's is there... but any place else I can check out? I'm not looking for super formal, but DH is a groomsman wearing an all black tux... so I'm thinking a black dress might not be the best? The reception is at the Hilton ballroom, and the ceremony is at a church, if that makes a difference :)

Re: dresses near 19th and L NW

  • Ann Taylor, depending on the store, definitely carries up to a 16 and sometimes up to a 20.

Also, if you can find a dress online, you can check its availability in store on the website and call and ask them to pull for you.  (this is my secret I have 5 minutes shopping trip trick)

  • I think there's a Talbots near that Ann Taylor. Also, I have never been to this store, but near the Potbelly on L St, there used to be (and probably still is) this store (not a brand name store) that always has lots of dresses in the window. It's on L Street someplace bewteen Wachovia and Potbelly. I have no idea what sizes, brands, or price points they carry.

You could also check that wedding dress store on the corner of Connecticut and L St. to see if they have anything on sale. I think they have regular formal-y dresses too. It's on the second floor. I can't remember the name.

  • I think you're thinking of a store called Xclusives that's right near the parking garage closest to 20th and L.  I really like that shop - they have a range of styles and sizes.  Only issue is that everything is final sale - so it's important that you leave happy.  The salesperson can be a bit pushy, but she is good at picking things out that will flatter your figure.
  • There's also a Dress Barn at the corner of Conn (17th) and K, next door to CVS.  A lot of thier stuff is fug, but they have some cute stuff mixed in sometimes.
  • i would definitely check out filene's basement, they actually have a lot of dresses downstairs.

macy's is a little bit of a trek but they do have nice dresses. and don't rule out ann taylor most stores carry dresses upto a size 16.

  • any chance you could go to friendship heights one night after work? you'd have lord & taylor, bloomies and several other stores within a few blocks. and anthropologie too!

  • Rizik's is over there too and they have some pricey things that they usually put on sale this time of year. It is definitely worth a look!

i actually have been suprised with dress barn lately. One opened around 14th and G (or?) recently and i actually got some cute things there.

i would hit AT on Conn Ave and Filene's basement!

  • Thanks ladies! I pick up DS from daycare in the evening, so that rules out any weeknight shopping, and why I have to do it at lunch :) Good tip on Ann Taylor online! Last time I went into the store, all their pants were size 12 or below, which is why I thought they might not carry things higher in that particular store. But I wasn't looking at their dresses. I'll definitely check out those other stores! Good to know I have options :)

  • it's so annoying that AT no longer carries their more formal attire in stores. i have a perfect dress (silk and strapless with hidden pockets!) that i wore to a wedding but it had to be ordered online and luckily it was the right size the first time since i ordered it only a few weeks before the wedding.

  • So I tried Filene's first, on the off chance that they had something and it would be cheap... and scored a dress normally $100, on sale for $39.99.

    SCORE!

So I got new shoes, too ;) Man that store is dangerous!
