Hello ladies!
I am currently stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky with my husband and we are headed for Fort Huachuca, AZ in a few months. I just wanted to see if anyone on here has lived there before or is currently stationed there. I want to hear about housing on the base and housing in the area of the base as well as anything fun to do in the area or sites to see! thank you in advance.
Re: Fort Huachuca
The Dogs and Us
For our family we loved it. The housing on post is mostly new (they are still in the process of tearing down and building new-- the waitlist is none even though it says there is), housing is also privatly operated. We even had a grassed fenced back yard and each little section of housing had a small playground. The px and commissary are decent, and out in town they just opened up the superwalmart. Love Target! The only bowling alley is on post.
In the surrounding towns you have Tombstone and Old Bigsbee (old historic places). We had phone exploring these old places and going down into the minds and taking the tours. It was fun. Then you also have the big cities close too.
We also went camping in the mountains and up at the lakes, Lake Sadona (that is prob not spelled right) is very pretty and great to camp at.
Overall its what you make of it!
Most of the housing here on post is new. They have been building really nice housing for enlisted members. There is a smaller amount of officer housing on post. Maintenance is really great. The PX is really small and the commissary is closed on Mondays.
We just had a big wildfire in town and everyone really pulled together. I do not find Sierra Vista too exciting. Thank goodness there is atleast a Target. A few months ago we got a Chipolte and an Olive Garden. If you need some civilization you can go up to Tucson. lol
PM me if you have any questions.

Sierra Vista is boring. It's filled with military, and retired military. They don't have much in the way of entertainment- mainly a rinky dink mall and movie theater.
However, Tucson is only an hour away, and like PP said, Tombstone and Bisbee are pretty cool.
I loved, loved, loved being at Ft Huachuca. The Px and Commissary are small, but I was able to get my groceries there, and I can't here, and we have a monster of a commissary. The post is small, and fairly easy to navigate, and the housing is new.
Do yourself the favor and live on post.
Thank you everyone for the insight. My husband is an officer and so we are debating either living in old housing on post or trying to find a place off post in a safe neighborhood while attempting to pocket some of the BAH. Any suggestions on neighborhoods to live in? Thanks again!
You really wont find something that is worth it, to compared to what you recieve on post. Our itty bitty apartment 2 bedroom apartment was over $1000 and when we moved to a 3bedroom on post with a yard it was way more for the BAH.
I would live off post if I could go back in time. We could have had a really nice house with the BAH we get. The officer housing is ok on post (although we have a bunch of MSGs on the block). We have linoleum throughout the WHOLE house. Most of my friends rent from ReMax and I like the newer houses down in Canyon de Flores, or by the mall on Avenida Cochise. I would not want to stay on Seventh Street.
The new senior NCO houses are ridiculously nice. Granite counter-tops, 20 inch tiles on the floor, carpet, high end appliances. We had water pipes freeze and then burst earlier this year and the builders were telling me what they were installing while demoing my kitchen.

This. When we were there, DH was in AIT, and we lived in old senior NCO housing, as they were set to be demmo'd shortly. It was a large 3 bedroom house, and much better than anything we could rent for the BAH, in a decent neighborhood. And while it was all tile floors, you get used to it.
