Texas travel advice needed

F1 will be in Austin next June, on my birthday.  The track is near the Austin airport, there aren't many hotels available in Austin itself.  We tenatively have a Hampton Inn booked in La Grange since it is a short drive and in the opposite direction from what we think will be crazy pre/post race traffic.  The race is three days, but obviously not all day.  DH suggested maybe staying in San Antonio instead so we would have nighttime activities, which would be non-existent in La Grange.

Would you opt for something like La Cantera or something on the Riverwalk?  We normally stay with friends in SA, so I am really unfamiliar with hotels there.  Do you think it would be worth the 1.5 hour drive every day to and from the racetrack?

Recommend your favorite hotels in the area.  We are diamond with Hilton, so if it is affiliated with them, that is a bonus.

Re: Texas travel advice needed

  • i don't think it would be worth the drive to the track, and i am willing to bet it will be traffic form all directions.

my favorite SA hotel (should you choose to go that route) is Hotel Contessa!

there are a whole bunch of B&B's in the Austin area, any of which would be a shorter drive than San Antonio... and there's also the san marcos outlet nearby.

  • I thought there was Hilton @ austin bergstrom? We just got back from SA 2weeks ago and stayed at Westin La Cantera, loved it! And they have some great kids activities (outdoors movies at dusk, s'mores, zoo/animal presentations, etc).

There is, but all Austin hotels I checked are booked solid (at least the Hilton brands and the Four Seasons)

  • I might look at staying in New Braunfels or Bastrop.  NB has some great restaurants and there is live music at Gruene Hall and a few other places in town.  It is about the same distance as La Grange.  Bastrop is only 30 miles from the Austin airport.

If you opt for SA, I think I might steer more towards the Riverwalk,. La Cantera, while on the north side, is way west.  1604 can get really backed up.

Did you look at Round Rock.  Now that the toll road is complete, that is a fast straight shot to the airport.

Cool idea, but what is the deposit/pre-pay issue like?  I have never used the site before.

Right now, they race organizers are trying to get the race date changed since it will probably be hotter than hell, so we need to be able to cancel without penalty if need be.

It depends on the individual property owner.  Each listing should have the cancellation policies.

yeah, they are all different, some are really minimal amounts, refundable up until a certain number days before, etc.  but you could just start making a list and wait to book until you know for sure since you have a backup plan with the hotel already.

we've used VRBO several times in various cities/states and had great success.

  • I love love love Hotel Valencia in San Antonio!!!  I've also stayed at the Hilton Palacio del Rio.  What about the Hyatt Hill Country Resort?
  • I love Hotel Contessa in SA.

Emily Morgan is also great. It's literally right next to the Alamo

  • I would not do LaGrange. Nothing to do. I would do San Antonio. There is an Embassy in San Marcos now. Did you check the Stephen F Austin in Austin? I stay there now and it is a great location but will likely be expensive. I can try to ask how rooms are blocked for that event...like blocks through a housing bureau or individual. I love the St. Anthony in San Antonio...historic hotel with great rooms.

I had checked there...it is booked.  Is there a way to get a room?  I would owe you massively, expensive is ok (within reason.)

  • Have you ever been or heard of Marble Falls (about 45 mins from Austin) or Horseshoe Bay Resort (Marriot)? It's on and around lake LBJ.

I emailed my counterpart to see what the deal is.  I'm guessing it works like Superbowl in that the rooms probably aren't actually booked, but they are blocked by groups.  Just like during Final Four earlier this year, there are agencies that will block out chunks of rooms and then sell you a package.  Almost any major sporting event does that, so I would be willing to bet that is the case.

  • JMO, but if you are going to be driving 3 hrs a day (if in SA) and then be outside at a track all day, you are going to be too exhausted to do anything at night.

I had no clue how far SA was from the track.  In Milan, we travelled well over 1.5 hours each way and still did stuff at night.  Maybe for now, we will keep the La Grange reservation and hope we can use our Hilton status to get something in Austin.

    Thanks for all your help!
