XP: Working Moms who Travel

I'm in consulting for a large firm based in the US, with client and offices worldwide.  My job currently consists of traveling ~100 days/year (typically in the form of flying out Monday morning, flying home Thursday evening).  If I continue to stay with this firm, I may be forced into traveling 200+ days/year.

I'm at a crossroads in my career as H & I are TTC our first soon and I'm contemplating my job options.  So, my question is, are there any working moms out there who travel for a portion of the work week?  If so, tell me about your work/life balance and how you feel about the quality of your family life.

  • I know this isn't answering the question you're asking, but somehow fathers manage to travel that much...

True, and good point.  I don't think there are many fathers on this board, but I'd love their input as well if they are!

I'm just trying to measure the quality of life a parent has with their child if they are gone that much.  I have plenty of coworkers who manage, but I don't feel like I can trust them to give me a straight answer as to what implications this has on their family life.

  • I also work for a consulting firm. While I don't travel to that extent, many of my colleagues do. Those that are male have SAHWs who care for their children. When I've been on trips with them, I've seen them make quick calls around their bedtime and such to try and stay connected. But I know it's hard for those that I'm closer to and can recognize the pain on their faces.

The women who travel often fall into one of three categories:

They don't have children; they have limited career paths because they choose not to travel as often; or have strained (for lack of a better word right now) relationships with their children.

*Sigh*  This is exactly my fear.  I'm thinking that #2 is my best option outside of moving to industry.  Thanks for the input.

  • I hear you! I used to have a job where i worked from home but did have to travel about 40% of the time.  I traveled domestic by air or car never more than 4 days in a row.  I did this for years when I was young because I knew there was no way I would want to or could do when I decided to marry and settle down.

I got married a few years ago in my late 30's and within 2 months I retired from the road.  I love sleeping in my own bed with my DH.  My current job pays MUCH less but I am so much happier.  Money can not buy time.  I do not miss traveling- at all! Not for a minute.

In my 12+ years of traveling NONE of my female co-workers had young children.  My co-workers had children that were grown and have left home or were single.

Good luck, go with your gut!

This is very helpful.  Thanks for the insight.
