what do I bring

We have been invited to an anniversary party that is a potluck. There are A LOT of people coming and I have no idea what to bring. I've asked if it should be an app, dessert, main course etc. I've been told there will be cake... So any suggestions? I really don't want to make a huge dish to feed 50 or so people... Speaking of that do I have to bring a dish that is expected to feed everyone? We are traveling from MA and staying in a hotel, so I will most likely have to buy something to bring. Dont' get me started on the pot luck aspect

Re: what do I bring

  • I woudln't expect it to feed everyone. Maybe 15-20 people.

Just do something easy. Like a Dip/things to dip. You are traveling so I wouldn't expect you to bring a main dish or anything.

Or order a few pizzas ;)

  • Oy! Do you know what kind of food will be served for the main course? It sounds like even that will be pot luck! I would bring a dish that serves about 20 people. If everyone else is being asked to bring dishes, you shouldn't need to bring a dish to serve 50!

Do you know if you will have a mini fridge in your room? You could always do Texas Caviar.

http://www.food.com/recipe/texas-caviar-181378  --- not the recipe I have used before but it's all essentially the same thing! You could bring the cut up veggies, a bowl to serve it in, a can opener, and the cans of beans and corn (I use canned petite diced tomatoes too). That way all you would have to do it mix it up in the hotel room the night before if you are staying there a few days, or if you are leaving from home and going to the party the next day, you can mix everything up at home and keep it in a cooler until you get to the hotel. It is so good plain, with tortilla chips, on a salad, etc. GL!

  • I made some chocolate covered pretzels for a party recently and they were a huge hit and super easy. Just dip the large rods in chocolate and lay on waxed paper to dry. I rolled some of them in coconut while wet and some I drizzled white chocolate on after they were dry. I stuck them in a large glass vase thing I had from our candy buffet and they were a huge hit and super easy.

  • are you a costco or bj's member? is there one nearby? you could pick something up there like a veggie platter, fruit platter, even a sushi platter.

and no, potluck does not mean every dish brought feeds 50 people - everyone is not going to eat/try everything, so just bring something you'd put out at a normal party, I think 10-20 servings is perfect.

could you just bring wine and beer?

I like Jaime and Claire's ideas. Both would be easy and both would go over well.

To answer the other question, no you are not responsible for bringing enough the feed everyone. 15-20 servings would be enough.
