5 point harness/ carseat ?

What is the nestie thoughts on 5 point harness for toddlers?   I have a tank Britax for my 3.5 year old and I think that will last her for many more pounds.  However, my other Britax she is going to outgrow here soon.   Would a booster be okay at this point?

Thoughts?

We have an Evenflo Maestro. I don't remember the specs but it's a 5 point that can accommodate a pretty tall kid. (Owen is very tall and still has a ton of room) It's also pretty cheap as far as quality car seats go. It's about $80 or so at Target. It's kind if ugly but it's a pretty good seat.

  • I'm not sure if it is techincally "ok" for her to be in a booster, but for me personally I wouldn't be comfortable with it. My 3 1/2 year old will probably be in a 5 point for at least 3 more years. I'm sure that he not meet the weight max on our seat by the time it expires and I plan on using it up to that point (if I can).
  • I think 4 yrs and 40lbs is the legal recommendation but I know boosters advertise 3yrs and 30lbs. My own opinion (for my children and any kids I transport) is that I don't feel comfortable with a seatbelt being the only real restraint with such little body weight and control should an accident happen. We have Peyton in a Graco Nautilus that she will likely stay in, harnessed, until the maximum. She will be 6 in Sept and is 34lbs. It has plenty of room for her to grow and it is super comfy for her too, she doesn't complain. Berkeley is K's age I think and she is in a Britax Marathon and still has some room in it (and is 31lbs).

ditto this with Rilyn. He loves his Nautilus carseat and still has plenty of room to be knocked out when we travel. He will be 6 in Oct. and is 35 lbs. Robyn...whats up with the little 6 yr olds? I dont think Ri will ever put on weight even though he eats a TON.

  • IMO, I wouldn't trust a child that young to only be restrained by a seat belt.  I hear great things about the Nautilus and Evan will be getting one when the baby needs his MyRide.  He's putting on weight lately but he's still not big.  He'll be in a 5 pt harness for a long time yet.

  • My personal opinion is to stick with the 5-pt as long as possible!  In fact, my son is almost 5.5 and is still in a 5-pt in my car in the Graco Nautilus.  He's in a booster in DH's truck, and it just isn't as "sturdy" IMO.  I will keep him in the 5-pt as long as possible, which with that seat is 65 lbs and 52" -- so we've got a ways to go .. height will come first (he's 40lbs and 49").  So, I may be a bit overly paranoid, but I'm going with the "as long as possible" route!
