Homemade gift ideas

With Christmas being 5 months away from today I started thinking about gifts for people.  Unfortunately DH and I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck, plus we are moving mid-December so we wont have a big Christmas budget this year.

A way I've learned to cut costs but still be able to give everyone at least a little something is by making part of their gift.  For instance, last year I bought my sister a DVD she really wanted but I also made her a scarf to go with it.  So I've started thinking of things I could make this year and found these cute little magnets. http://www.notmartha.org/tomake/marblemagnets/

I figure I can customize them based on the person (ie, my sister is into music so I could find different music notes, my Mom is into cats so maybe I could print small pictures of her cats, etc).  I figure I could make them in sets of 6 and then give them to people along with a gift card to their favorite store or another smaller gift.  Do you think this would be a dumb idea or would you think it was cute if you received it?

Do you ever make gifts for people?  If so, what kind of things have you done?  If you've decided to make things for people this year, when do you typically start?

I think those are a great idea Xan.  And, the fact that you will personalize them will be a really nice gift.

I usually make a quilt for friends that are having a baby.  It's nothing elaborate, but flannel squares sewn together and quilted.  They're always nice a cozy.

I think those sounds really great, and personal!  You should definitely do it.  I treasure handmade gifts way more.

I try to make as many gifts as possible for people.  Usually baked goods, scarves, etc, but sometimes jewelry, accessories, lunch totes and other goodies.  I get great ideas from wedding websites that have DIY favours!  Looking on Project Wedding always turns up some cute and easy ideas.  They're always cheap to make, very fun, and always turn out adorable.

I collect ideas on one of my pinterest boards--either DIY ideas for my home and myself, or gift ideas for others.  There are some great ones on there, if you need some more ideas!  Click me!

  • I am working on some quilts for Christmas gifts this year. I will probably try some other homemade items this year but I haven't picked anything specific.

  • In the past I have made fleece blankets for the neices and nephews.  They are super easy!  I just cut the fringe and knot them together.  I have also made the soup or cookies in a jar thing.  I have picked up different magazines at Walmart with ideas too.

The fleece blankets are a good idea!  Those would probably be good gifts for my younger brother-in-law's...I could do their favorite sports teams or something.  Do you know on average how much one costs to make?

A friend made me a fleece tie blanket like this (click) and I would expect it was pretty cheap - it all depends on the size and type of fleece you pick. For mine she did a patterned piece on the top and then the under side is a super soft plain colored fleece that matches.
