Applique / Zig Zag Stitch - help!
Someone on this board encouraged me to try out appliques... I finally gave it a shot over the weekend making Tie-Onesies and although they look 'ok', I'm not totally pleased. :-(
I discovered weeks ago that my zig-zag stitch wasn't working all that well - so I had my machine serviced. Unfortunately - $99 later, I'm still having the same problem. I'm starting to think its ME that's the problem, and not the machine. :-)
So, my dumb question is... for a zig zag stitch - should the stitch look the same on both sides? Inside and out? When I tested the zig zag stitch - the top of my fabric looked like a bunch of YYYYY's (tension problem?) and the bottom/underside of my fabric looked like an appropriate zig zag stitch. That doesnt seem right to me because I really want the applique to be on top as I sew - so I can see where I'm stitching - but because I'm getting the YYYY's - I have to flip it inside out and just hope I'm lined up under.
Another question is - I have an great embroidery machine as well - am I better off doing appliques on that?

I can't really see the stitching very well, the photo is tiny.
Have you messed with the tension at all?
Try posting a bigger picture. Get some test fabric and some different colored thread (black on solid, lighter color) and do some swatches. Do a strip, flip it over and do another, so we can see both sides at once.

I would try adjusting the top tension a little. Make it a bit tighter, but not too much.
Mine matches top and bottom (I have a computerized machine so I really don't mess with tension), but I think that part making the Y is the part from the top.

I agree with emo that you have a tension problem. Your top tension is too tight, that is why you see the bobbin thread on the top (creating the Y). Here is a great illustration to help when you have tension issues:

I have googled all day (well, not all day, but a good portion!) for something like this.
I usually go the wrong way with tension at first lol.

Your tie shirts turned out great! Sometimes, appliques are trial and error. On my end, a little more error than trial but it works out.
