Please share your closet shoe organization

I just have a few of the Target white shelves on the floor, but I am finding that I tend to not put my shoes back, I can't see what's on the bottom shelf, and DS knocks all of them off to stand on the shelf sometimes, so it doesn't really organize anything in the end.

I want to get the closet rod hanging shoe organizers, but the problem is that that section of my closet has the split rods with a shelf inbetween, so I only have room for a lower half organizer - but most I am finding are full closet length.

Anyone have anything they use that you recommend?  I would prefer something with compartments for each pair.  I want to make sure it doesn't sag, either.

Here is what I have found that might work so far:

Rolling 18 pocket shoe bin

3 shelf organizer - I know this is for sweaters, but this is kind of what I am looking for - a half closet length, but with compartments for each pair.

10 pocket free standing

8 shelf bag - this is probably slightly too long for the space.  I only have about 36-38 inch height to work with, so this will likely be bunched up at the bottom (it's 48 in).

10 pocket canvas organizer - this is mostly what I am looking for, I just can't vouch for the quality, since it's much less expensive than the 10 pocket self standing above.  And I wish there was one more pocket pair on the bottom - I feel like there would be some wasted space b/c the closet area is taller than the dimensions of this. (26.5 in. high, and the space is around 36-38 in. high)

Boot rack - I am loving this boot rack, but I only have maybe 3? pairs of boots, and $70 - yowzers!

Re: Please share your closet shoe organization

  • My shoe organization strategy is 3-fold:

First shoes that I do not wear often go in shoe boxes on the top shelf of my closet.  I don't need my strappy silver or gold shoes every day, so I prefer them to be up out of the way, in a nice box so they don't get damaged.  My boots are also up there in boot boxes.

Second, flip flops & ballet slippers are in an over the door organizer.

Finally, my every day dress shoes & sneakers are in a compartmental hanging shoe bag.

  • I'm no help.  I have this nice built in shoe rack that every girl would dream of... and you can find my shoes all over the house (wherever  I took them off) or on the floor of my closet with half of my clothes.

    i'm such a mess.

lol, this is me. I have a built-in in the closet and only my rarely-worn shoes are there. You can find the rest scattered around the house, unmatched because L likes to play with shoes.

This exactly.  I have gorgeous floor to ceiling shoe shelves  (different sized cubby holes) that my FIL built but my shoes are all over the place or jammed haphazard into the holes because Cooper likes to take them all out and carry them around then I get in a hurry and shove them all back in holes quickly (not matched up or organized in any fashion) so the cat won't chew on them while I'm at work.

whew, i feel so much better.  DH always tells me that i don't "respect our house" because I'm such a mess.  whatever... its not like i'm running around knocking holes in the wall.  i just don't put everything right back where it "belongs"

Can I just say that I'm very jealous of all of your shoe racks.  My shoes are stacked in their boxes taking up space in my closet.  I seriously have no room to turn around because of the stacks of shoes.  As soon as I get home my shoes go back in their box in the closet so the cats don't get a hold of them.  I don't mind them rubbing on the flip flops, but I do mind them rubbing on my nice shoes.

If the shoe comes with a dust bag, it stays in its box.

If not, it goes in the particle board cubbies.  I got them at Target and they are awesome.  I stack flip flops/sandals in the cubbies and the wedges get their own compartment.

Our closet has built in shoe racks at the bottom, which is where I put all the sneakers.

I highly recommend the shoe cubbies from Target.  I don't think I would be a fan of the hanging racks.

  • I'm terrible about putting my shoes back exactly where they belong, but the system I'm using now has been the best so far for me. I have built in shelves. I've dedicated 2 or 3 shelves for my "everyday" shoes (athletics, flip flops, sandals, etc.)...the rest are in plastic shoe containers...someday I aspire to labeling them with photos of the enclosed shoes. I am doing much better putting mback my sandals and flip flops b/c they slide into place, no clutter. Yea, sometimes I just kick them off in the closet but then it's a quick clean up.

I like these, but I might have the same problem of visiblity on the lower levels since it will be on the ground for me.  Also - do you think they would be able to stand up on end?  That would make more use of my space, but not sure if they would be sturdy that way?  Or if the shoes would fit correctly?

  • The only shoes I keep in the closet are the ones we don't wear often, and they are stacked in the clear container store shoe boxes on the shelf.  Everyday shoes, we have a shoe rack/shelf near the front door with a bench.  We don't wear shoes in the house, so they come off as soon as you walk in the door, and don't get put on until you're ready to leave the house.  Am I the only one who does this?

I had them flipped the opposite way in our old closet to fit better.  I am not sure which way is the right way, but it works fine both ways.  They are over 10 years old and have survived two moves.  I saw on the Target website that Rubbermaid makes one that can be mounted on the wall with brackets so it would solve your visibility issue:

Wow, that is a longass link.

  • No - we (when they don't get just flopped and left in a messy pile by the door) line them up under the entryway table which has a low shelf about 3 to 4 inches from the floor.  I tried a boot tray to at least show they had a "place" but it restricted my ability to put my heels in there and wasn't deep enough for DH's skis he calls feet.

  • I had all of my shoes in clear containers up on the closet shelf but would forget about most of them. Last year I had DH turn 1 wall of the walk in closet into shelves.  So we have 5 shelves and all of our shoes are out in the open and in their places.  I have found that both of us are more likely to put them back where they go now.  I love seeing all of my pretty shoes lined up like a shoe store.

lol me too. My shoes are in a huge pile in my closet. It drives my husband nuts. I will say that I do BETTER when I put away the shoes I don't wear often (in boxes, like halfpint mentioned) and get RID of the shoes I just don't wear. That helps.
