My great uncle was baling hay (at 1:30 in the morning) and the tractor wouldn't start, so he basically had to hotwire it. It was in gear, so it took off the moment he did it and ran over his right leg.
He popped up, went to walk on his right leg and crumbled to the ground. He broke his femur.
The tractor didn't have the lights on, so he could hear it, but couldn't see where it was. He managed to crawl to his pick-up, turn on the lights, only to see that the tractor was headed right towards the pick-up. He grabbed his coffee thermos and jammed it on the gas to get out of the way.
He then drove (with the thermos on the gas) to a high point with cell service then called my cousin to call 911. And since he was just sitting there, he decided to have his morning cup of coffee while he waited.
He had surgery last night on his femur, he had a rod put in. There was a scare about lung embolisms, but as of this morning he's doing great.
Re: A "What the what?" story for you
Glad he's doing well!
I did have to chuckle a little, it sounds like a Chevy Chase movie.

That's crazy. He's lucky and unlucky at the same time.
Odd that it's your great uncle. One of my great uncles died baling hay. They had cut it the day before and they were trying to get it baled before a storm came up. I'm not sure how much sense this makes, but he and a helper were behind the baler trying to speed things up. They were kicking the hay up closer to the baler so it would pull it in quicker. He was standing on some of the hay when the baler pulled it in and he went in with it. The guy with him said he turned his head for a second and when he looked back, my uncle was gone. It killed him instantly.
Glad your Uncle is okay.
BTW, what is baling hay?
ETA: Sorry if this is a dumb question.
first you cut the hay in the field and then you use a baler (pulled behind the tractor) and it pulls the loose hay in and makes big bales for you to use.
I am not a farmer so its not a great description

Here is a picture. Hope this explains it a bit more.. but Lindsay was right. A farmer mows his hay crop down, it lays in the field until it is dryed. Then you go into the field with the tractor and baler and bale the hay.
If you scroll through this brochure you'll see some pictures.

I forgot to mention that it was later found high-centered on a bale of hay...running. My cousin climbed up to shut it off. For those of you who have baled before, you know how dangerous that is.
Yikes! I'm glad that they found it before anything crazier happened!
