Does your weight change often?

I've been working my butt off for the past month, eating well (except for the potato chips I had on Saturday), walking lots (15 miles covered Monday-Thursday each week), using weights and doing pilates... but I swear, my weight is driving me crazy! I can vary 8lbs from one morning to the next - and it's not just the scale! I can physically feel fatter on one day and smaller on the next. I've never been one for hormonal bloating before, but I'm beginning to wonder if that's what's going on.

Ugh. Tell me I'm not the only one!

Re: Does your weight change often?

  • My weight definitely fluctuates (can be as much as 3-5 lbs per day), dependent on what I eat and definitely during TOM.  When's the last time you had a physical and a blood test?  I would have your doctor check your thyroid just in case.

  • My weight fluctuates quite a bit. I would say that I'm closer to NeptoonGrl though, 3-5 pounds per day. A few weeks ago though I went up 7 pounds in 2 days. Ugh.
  • My weight fluctuates around 2-4 lbs. I do weigh myself at the same time everyday. You may want to get an overall check up.

I only weigh myself once a week, but I find things like time of day, the amount of water I've had that day (or the day before if it's the morning), what kinds of foods I ate (ie, things that cause bloat = higher scale reading), when the last time I worked out was and what type of exercise it was (heavy weights = sore muscles = water retention), when the last time I pooped was, etc effect the number on the scale and the way my pants fit, not to mention where I am in my cycle.

All that being said, if you're interested in losing weight, it's all about the amount of food you eat, not so much the exercise that you do.  Eating "healthy" is all well and good, but if you're eating too much (or way too little) you won't see the changes on the scale.

  • I'm afraid to step on the scale at the moment (poor diet and lack of exercise is not going to make for a pretty number), but when I was weighing myself regularly it would vary by a few pounds, but not too much.  I always weighed myself at the same time of day (morning), which I think makes a difference.  If I did a nighttime check it would always be a few pounds higher.

Oh, no, I'm definitely counting calories, but it's all within the 1200-1550 range. If I go below 1200, I get woozy and if I go above 1600, I put on lbs like that (imagine a snapping sound here). I know that I carry more weight on the day after eating dairy of any sort than if I avoid it all together.

I'm comfortable with the 2-5 lb weight shifts, that's normal, it's these gigantic ones that are weirding me out. It's the first time I feel like I've noticed it in terms of physical difference rather than just a number on the scale, you know? I've never had fat days before.

I just had blood work done last month, and it was all clear with the thyroid among other things, so I'm really not sure what's going on...

All I know is I'm going to be in a bikini on the beach in a week and I'd prefer to look like I weight 8lbs less, you know?

I figured you knew better.  :)

Maybe just focus on really eliminating anything you know causes bloat and drown yourself in water.

  • How about salt? I found when I eat less salt I'm not quite so water filled.

  • I have the pretty normal fluctuations (2-4 pounds day to day depending on all the factors other stated above).  However, when I was on BC I ended up having large gains (7-8 pounds), physical changes (HUGE bloat) and felt absolutely pyschotic (almost broke up with DH - then bf, and almost moved out of my Dad's house).  I ended up having to change the pill I was on.  Are you on bc?

I found I had to cycle to a different pill every 3-6 months to avoid these symptoms and eventually just went off completely.

  • I'm on BC, but I've been on it since I was 18 with no side effects. I tried another one a couple years back that left me suicidal once a month! That was no fun, so I'm back on the one I was on before.

It might be salt - but the thought of giving up my Claussen pickle habit depresses me to no end!

Claussen pickles are my weakness. I will eat a whole jar in a few days. They are so good.

I don't have a pickle obsession, but I will admit that I am very partial to Claussen over any other brand.  They just don't taste the same!
