  • I'm sorry Jena - that is hard. I can't imagine how tough it is to deal with patients and have to lose them. I don't think it's bad that you are grieving for him and his family.

I hope you find the peace you need.

bleh. I feel sad for the family. I know the were in a good place and okay with the situation. I just needed to get that off my chest before the Dr came back.

  • As someone who is starting to feel more like a number at my doctor I actually find it encouraging that you feel something - if that makes any sense.  That said, I'm sorry you're feeling sad.

I hate going to the Dr and feeling like I'm just another face- but that's the reality in a lot of practices.

Our practice is really small, and it's just the Dr & I so we have a pretty personal relationship with most of our patients.. Some patients we only see once or twice- but some patients we spend 1-2/wk for several months.. it's pretty difficult to seperate yourself from that.. it is for me anyway.

  • Who says you shouldn't be sad? I want that kind of compassion from people who work at my doctor's offices. I don't expect it from my doctor, because they have more important things to concentrate on than being polite and tender-hearted. But the people working in the office better damn well be a humanfuckingbeing.

    That said, I'm sorry you're hurting. :(

well no one says I shouldn't be sad. I guess I feel like it's kind of unprofessional? Like I shouldn't allow myself to have feelings for the patients? I don't know. It's a tricky place to be in.I just feel like I'm going to have a rough road ahead of me if I get caught up with every patient.. I mean... the majority of them have cancer. cancer kills.that's a lot of death. that's a lot of sadness.

  • You are human - if course you feel a bit of a loss. I work in the funeral industry, so I know how hard it is to be both compassionate and keep a professional distance. But whatever you do while you are finding that balance, don't NOT allow yourself to be compassionate. Your pts need that from you.

    Exactly.

And, you are strong enough to deal with this, and others. And if you're not now, you will be. Don't let the job make you hard, let it make you more compassionate.

    Great quote :)
I'm sorry to hear about your patient.  Death is so sad.  H's grandpa passed recently and I looked up his address in my phone for the Salvation Army to pick up some stuff and then I realized, I can delete the entire contact from my phone, what an awful thought.  I'm going to leave it there for awhile.

  • Jena, you are great at what you do because you care and because you are a professional.  It is OK to feel sad, cry, and empathize.  After working with and around cancer patients for years I can honestly tell you that they will continue to touch your life and yes, you will have moments of sadness and yes, you can still be professional and connect with your patients.
