Last night on my break at the mall I work at one of my ex-colleagues saw me and we caught up on what's been going on in our respective careers. In 2009 I worked with her at a major jewelry store in the mall as a temporary holiday employee. I told her that nothing would make happier than to return to the store as a full-time sales associate and that I've applied on the company's website for every job opening that falls into that catagory but with no luck.
My former colleague urged me to write an email to the manager who hired me and the other manager who supervised me. I left the company in good standing when the holiday position expired. The problem is I feel awkward. What do I say to these ladies without sounding pathetic/desperate? Something like this just sounds lame:
"Hello Manager's name:
This is Melissa ______. I was a seasonal sales professional at your store in December 2009. It was the most satisfying retail position I've yet had and it would mean a great deal to me to be a part of the company's team again driving sales and nurturing a loyal client base. Since 2010 I've applied for 4 positions on the employment portion of your website but didn't receive a response. If you know of a vacancy that suits my skills set, would you be kind enough to notify me? Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Melissa _____"
Is there a better approach to this project of mine? Cold calling them makes me very uncomfortable. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance for your help!
Re: Cold Emailing a past manager for a job
I think you're on the right track, I would just overall say your email doesn't sound "warm" enough - if you know this people you're emailing, I think you can be a bit more friendly and warm. Also, I would mention the person you spoke to so it doesn't seem like it's coming out of nowhere. Something like this:
Hello Manager's Name:
I hope you'll remember me from December 2009 when I had the great pleasure of being a seasonal sales professional at XXXX. Since my time with the company in 2009, I've applied for a number of positions on the website and have made it a goal to join your team again. After running into NAME recently, he/she encouraged me to reach out personally to express my desire to work for XXX again.
My time with you in 2009 was the most satisfying retail position I've had and it would mean a great deal of me to be a part of the company's team again driving sales and nurturing a local client base. Please keep me in mind when you see future vacancies that might suit my skill set. I am extremely motivated to work for the company and hope to work with both of you again soon.
Thank you, MarcyLT. Your email draft is much better than my original one!
I'll keep tweaking it.
