Mom's with babes that STTN...

KR has regressed a tad.

He has started to wake up at 2:00 or 3:00 at night. He doesn't wake up screaming, just fussing, so I go in, put his paci back in, and he'll be good for about 30 minutes. Then the fussing starts again.

Then I'll take him to my bed because I'm a walking zombie and feed him. (Seriously formula feeders-how do you do it? I seriously can barely function, let alone make a bottle at 3 am! You amaze me!). He goes back to sleep til about 5:30, then I feed him again and he gets popped into the swing for the last hour of sleep.

Here's my question. I'm not against any methods for sleep training. I'm wondering if I need to let him "cry it out" at 3:00 am? He goes to sleep just fine by himself. I don't know if he's really hungry or sucking for comfort.

He goes straight back to sleep-he doesn't really wake up at all when I feed him.

I started him on rice cereal last night and that didn't seem to help at all.

Any ideas?

  • Solids didn't make a bit of difference for Parker.  He didn't sleep through the night until he was 8.5-9 months old.  I personally think that 4 months is a little young to let them CIO, but it is your choice.  At 4 months old Parker was up 3-4 times a night nursing.  Sorry I'm no help.

  • It sounds to me like he is going through a growth spurt and just needs to eat more.  I would feed him and 3:00 and then put him back down for a few more hours.  I have heard of the "4 month wakeful" where STTN babies regress.  Usually doesn't last so long, but can be rough on he parents.

I asked my pediatrician about solids at 4 months and she said that many studies that have been done, and there has been no correlation found between eating solids and sleeping through the night.  Each baby will sleep through the night when he or she is able to.

As for sleep training, CIO worked for us, but we didn't do it until she was 6 months.  I don't think I would have been comfortable doing it earlier.

  • Katie started STTN at 3 months, then went through the "4 month wakeful". (started getting up in the middle of the night to eat). Now she just fusses sometimes because she either needs her paci or because she rolled over on stomach and wakes herself up.

I think what helps is that she doens't nap as much during the day. Don't get me wrong, she still takes naps, but not as many and for not as long as she used too.

    GL!

  • Are there any signs of teething? Samuel was STTN until he started teething. He had even stopped middle of the night feeding up until then. He was very fussy at night. This happened bad for several nights and then I saw the teeth coming in. Last night he slept until 4:30 which is fine by us and much better than waking up at midnight and 2am!
