Ladies who take Prenatal Vitamins

What kind do you take? Do you have to take an anything additional or do they have everything that your doctor recommends in them? I'm looking into them primarily because I really should be taking a vitamin daily and thought I might as well start a prenatal because we plan to start TTC in the next year or so. TIA!

Re: Ladies who take Prenatal Vitamins

  • I take Natures Bounty and it has DHA in it so I don't take anything else with it.

  • I take the Target brand Up & Up. When I went in for my yearly a few months ago, the NP I saw suggested I also take a vitamin D supplement because of the lack of sunshine here but I haven't gotten around to buying it yet.
  • Last doctors appointment I got a prescription for a pnv and take a separate DHA with it. Before I got this prescription I bought the target brand of women's one a day pnv that also comes with a DHA capsule, I actually really liked those pnv.

  • I took the prenatal package from GNC.
    Shot first, questions later.
  • I take Vitafusion prenatal gummies because they're easy on the stomach.  They have DHA and folic acid, but they have zero iron and don't have a full day's calcium.  I also have a prescription prenatal that has iron as well, but they make me feel sick, so I'm sticking with the gummies for now.
  • I took Nature Made PNV before switching to a perscription. I have continually taken DHA as well, and additional calcium, vit D and a vit B complex for reasons other than reproductive health.

  • I took the Target brand.  Later in pregnancy we added an extra iron supplement because I was a bit anemic.

I really wanted to do the Vitafusion ones because they are gummies. But the no iron thing and having to do supplements of iron won't really work for me. I had a run in with severe anemia as a teenager and had to do supplements so I would rather find something all inclusive. Do we know of any gummies that have it all?

What type of iron supplement did you take? Was it Rx or over the counter? I think I'll end up having to do that because of a previous history of anemia.

This. When I was pg before, I got the brand at WalMart that came with DHA supplement and I added in calcium chewies because I hate dairy.

There's really not much of a difference to me.

ETA: My current prescribed prenatal has Iron at 27mg/150% of daily value.. if that helps at all.

  • Every brand of prenatal vitamin I tried came right back up.  My midwife just had me start taking a gummy multi-vitamin with DHA.  I also took an extra calcium suplement.

  • I took target brand until I got pg then I took what my OB prescribed.  No idea what they were though, sorry :)

  • I have a prescription PNV with DHA in it.  I don't know the name of it though.  I also take fologuard.  I need the extra folic acid b/c of the MTHFR.

  • I take a prescription prenatal because I need the extra iron (I was slightly anemic in some bloodwork.) But before I got pregnant I took what my MIL (an OB/GYN) recommended for an over the counter brand. One a Day Prenatal with DHA. Also, because of our family history of neural tube defects, I took extra folic acid.

I take them at night right before bed since at times they make me kinda queasy.

  • I take a Rx prenatal that is pretty much all inclusive. The Nurse practitioner heard we were TTC, and immediately prescribed it. It's free at the pharmacy, doesn't make me sick, so I go with it.
  • I take the generic prenatals from whatever store is closer.

Well darn, that's no good!  I don't know of any gummies off the top of my head that have iron, but it's not something I've researched.  Hopefully there's something out there for you!

  • Before I got pregnant I took Natures Own Prenatals from the commissary or wherever I could get them. They go down easily and my hair grew like weeds.

Now I just take what the OB prescribes me a long with Nature's Own fish oil.

  • I used to take the Target brand, but when I got KU they made me sick. Now I take Flinstone chewables at night.

  • I mentioned to my PA at my last appointment that we were thinking of TTC at some point before too long, and she gave me a script for a pre-natal vitamin.  So, I take that.  It's got 1mg of folic acid...

Before that, I took flintstone's chewables.  I found many brands of multi-vitamins made me _really_ nauseous, and these ones did not.  And they had 400 micrograms of folic acid, which is decent, but obviously not as good as what I'm on now.  (I also took another 400 micrograms separately.)

The PA was impressed I knew what folic acid was.  Hearing that kinda made me sad.  :(

  • You can get them free on base if you're a dependent. It's prescription, though. Just ask next time you go in. Not sure if they're "good" or bad... They don't make me nauseous... What does make me sick is the fish burps from my GNC "non fish-burp" fish oil, but I take them anyway...

  • Regarding the anemia aspect, I also had to add an iron supplement during pregnancy (and Rx), but the prenatals were enough iron to keep my levels good until the 2nd trimester, despite also having a history of anemia in adolesence/early adulthood. If you can, I'd start with getting bloodwork to check your levels now, then a few weeks after you start the PNVs get it checked again (if your base iron levels were concerning) to see if the PNVs are enough for your TTC stage or not. That's what my PCM recommended for me.

Oh that's a smart idea! I'll ask my PCP the next time I go in since the lab for that office is right across the street from my office as opposed to driving to the GYN which is far away.
