AW and a Breastfeeding question

Ok so I fed Brin around 9 and he was asleep in bed by 10, he didn't wake up again until 4:30. Usually he wakes up around 2 and 5/6ish to eat but he never woke up at 2! My question is, is this ok or should I still be waking him to feed? He is 3 weeks and gaining weight just fine. My second question is what do I do about my milk? At 4:30 I was leaking everywhere. I have been told not to pump if I can help it so I will regulate and I wasn't in that much pain just kind of sore. Do I suffer through it, hand express/ pump? Will this decrease my supply with him sleeping so much I am kind of paranoid about that (and so is DH lol). Last night could have been a fluke but it certainly brought up some questions!

Re: AW and a Breastfeeding question

  • My pedi had told me to not let them go more than 5 hours without eating during the first month, then let them sleep as long as they would like.  However, as a mom I say let him sleep!

If you feel uncomfortable, I would say to pump just to take the edge off, but don't pump completely so that your supply can regulate.  It shouldn't decrease your supply, you will just have more for him to eat during other parts of the day (theoretically).

  • I have always been told once they are back up to their birth weight you can let them sleep at night. But to make sure you feed them during the day a lot. I never pumped when I was full when he would sleep longer. If you need to you could hand express to take the edge off.
