toilet bowl cleaner

Hi ladies! First time posting here. I am at a loss with what to do with my toilet. It constantly smells like urine even after just cleaning it. I am cleaning it frequently with small kids yet it still has a constant odor. There is definitely a black grime under the rim of the bowl that I can never get out using my Method toilet bowl cleaner. I would love a green option, but at this rate I am ready to buy a new toilet! Any recs for specific cleaners or any other help would be so appreciated!

Re: toilet bowl cleaner

  • I'm having a similar experience.  I saw the Kaboom toilet bowl cleaner commercial and decided to try it.  It is definitely a harsh chemical, but, it does work well for cleaning. Not sure how to solve the constant pee smell...Looking forward to suggestions.

  • Stirring in a quarter cup or so of Borax or any brand of Washing Soda into the toilet bowl before scrubbing with Method will raise the pH (more basic) in the water, which lets the detergents work harder.  Are the kids making it all the way into the toilet?  Sometimes urine can dry in the grout in the tiles on the floor, and when you step over it, agitating it, it will smell too.  But yeah, sometimes toilets just smell like toilets until the right cocktail of cleaner and booster comes along!

  • Take a toothbrush and scrub around the base of the toilet where it meets the tile floor. I use Comet cleanser. Sometimes urine collects there, and smells. Wipe up the residue with a wet rag.Have you removed your toilet seat and cleaned in all the crevices?

As far as under the rim of your toilet--you need to put on some rubber gloves, grab a coarse scrubby, shake some Comet onto it, and get under there and scrub.

  • For the inside of the bowl I would try Soft Scrub and a toothbrush.  I normally use Lysol toilet bowl cleaner- I know its not a green option but its what I'm used to and know works.

We really like the Scrubbing Bubbles Cleaning Toilet Gel. It just sticks to the side of the bowl with this neat applicator. If you don't want your guests to see it, you can always stick it up under the bowl a little bit. Most of the time, guests ask "What is that?" But who cares because it works well.

  • lysol toilet bowl cleaner works wonders.

  • It's a little bit time consuming but if you drench toilet paper in lemon juice and place it under the rim where the black stuff is, leave it for about 30 minutes you should be able to scrub off the crud with a pumice stone or light sand paper.
  • Try some peroxide mixed in water.
  • Nothing beats good old fashioned bleach. 1 cup in the tank, and 1 cup in the bowl for 15 minutes, brush then flush. Also make sure you put 1 cup in 1 gallon of hot water and wipe the toilet seat, under the seat and the toilet rim. should work wonders.

  • What I would do in your shoes is put on some gloves and scrub the beejeezus out of the black crud using whatever means necessary (baking soda paste, pumice stone made for this purpose from the hardware store), and then clean it frequently using Method or just plain diluted vinegar to keep it from coming back.  "Swishing" the toilet is on my daily cleaning list (? la FlyLady); I frequently miss a day or two a week, but it takes less than a minute in the morning and ensures that it never gets out of hand.

As for the smell, how old is the toilet seat?  When we moved into our first apartment, the bathroom smelled like urine no matter how much I cleaned.  We replaced the seat and the smell went away.

  • Not very green...but The Works takes care of most stains pretty quickly.
