puree foods for babies

I have a question for you ladies. Did/does anyone make their own puree foods for their babies? If so, did you like it? Do you find its too time consuming? Do you find it has more benefits over buying the puree foods in the store. Thanks! Im thinking about doing it but I have some research to do first.

Re: puree foods for babies

  • it is so easy. i started it for Ava, but didn't continue long. it makes a lot at once and can be frozen into cubes so it's not like you need to make it daily.

i used my regular pans, a steamer insert i already had, a food mill that my mom used to make us baby food, my stick blender, and i bought some food storage containers - little square ones with pop on/off attachable lids http://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=15154047& - made it easy to send it to daycare without transferring to another container.

in the beginning, you make it more watery and then you thicken it up.

    i think i used http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/ for info.

a friend has a Beaba from williams sonoma and loves it - i think it steams and purees the food in one container. it's probably a good registry gift.

to be honest, i was working FT, in grad school FT and I commute over 15 hrs a week too. Something had to give at some point! And I decided there was nothing wrong with organic prepackaged baby food. I learned that Ava was sort of picky though - the jarred stuff is so much smoother and she preferred that after knowing about the two.

  • I did for about 7 months until he was refusing it. Its very easy and IMO much healthier. There are no additives and preservatives. I was very happy and proud that I was able to do this for him.

I used a steamer basket, a magic bullet or food processor, ice cubes trays with covers and zip lock bags. I labeled and dated all the bags with the frozen cubes. I popped however many cubes he needed in the microwave and mixed in some organic oatmeal.

I referenced wholesomebabyfood too. I played around with it and made my own combos.  Its not too time consuming. I would do it every Sunday and the longest part was waiting for them to freeze.

  • I'm very proud to say that A never ate a jar of baby food in his life.  I made everything he ate.  I used a steamer basket, my blender, food trays with lids & good 'ol ziploc bags.  I would make big batches of food on the weekends to last me the week since I was working & would send bags over to SIL for her freezer since she was watching him at the time.  I dated all the bags so I knew how long they had been in the freezer but they never stayed in there long so it was never a problem.

It saved me a ton of $ and was so much healthier for A.  I wouldn't buy any of the machines they have on the market for making baby food, my blender worked perfectly fine :)

I used a lot of websites plus a book for recipies/ideas.  Here's a few of my favorite ones:

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>
  • I made almost all of G's baby food purees until he was eating more table foods.  Super, super easy and it doesn't require any special knowledge or equipment.

We already had the Magic Bullet on hand so, that's what I used.  I would either cook up frozen or fresh veggies and fruits, dice them up, throw them in the bullet with a bit of water, puree them to a very smooth consistency and then put them in baby food cube trays to freeze.  once frozen, i would pop them out, add them to a labeled freezer bag and throw them back in the freezer to free up the trays for the next batch.

Do it!  No real research needed.  I got the freezer trays from Buy, Buy Baby and only used the ones specific for baby food because they had airtight lids and I didn't like the idea of using, regular open ice cube trays trays.

  • I used these. They were much cheaper then the special "Baby food" ones at BRU for like $10. But I do have two of those too. I have 4 trays and still could have used more.
  • I'm going to attempt it but honestly do not think I'll be doing alot of it.  My plan is to try and hit farmers markets to get whats in season.  I bought some carrots last week i need to make and maybe pick up some fresh avocados as well.  The rest of his meals will be premade baby food. I was also told at this point Mj can have whatever fruits/veggies/meats we are eating in puree as long as nothing is grilled.

  • Thank you so much ladies! :) I really appreciate the information!! I'm even more excited now to do this after hearing what you guys have to say about it. The nice thing is that I'm only going back to work part time so I will be home so much more. I figured with my extra time home I could do this. Thanks so much for the advice!

Good to know if you don't want to get them in 2's. The brand I bought at Buy Buy Baby were $10 for 2 covered trays so, it worked out the the same price as these and then I used a 20% coupon.

  • i did as well.  totally worth it.  WAY healthier.  i completely plan to do it again when the time comes.  my two cents:

-i started with the Beaba, it broke after about the 4th use and the customer service was awful.  i switched to steaming in a pot and the Magic Bullet, which is actually better because you can make larger quantities at one time.

-it is however not always cheaper or convenient- like when you want to feed your kid some food that is not in season.  eg, frozen organic fruits offseason= dinero.

-i used the Baby Cubes for storage.  i bought them new on eBay.  super convenient and have many uses.

    good luck!

  • I too made A's food.  It was much cheaper and healthier!!  In the beginning I steamed most foods in a pot and then used the magic bullet and froze it in the baby food ice cube trays with lids, I then transferred to ziploc bags labeled with date and what was in them.  Once she tried everything and was used to eating, I began to puree up what we ate and continued to freeze any leftovers for lunch the next day.

  • I did it, occasionally, but realistically I work 60+ hours a week and don't always have time to cook food for myself......  The only jarred things I did were fruits and veggies, though, no meats or anything like that.
