Do you think it would be silly to turn our spare room into a closet?

On F&B there's always these girls turning spare rooms into closets and I get so jealous. I freaking hate our master closet and would love to turn the spare room into one.

The problem is that I've been "saving" that room for a nursery. I didn't want to fix it all up and then be sad when I had to take it down and go back to my small closet. At this point I don't want to save a room for something that isn't even currently happening.

I would just put up shelves and things from Ikea - nothing expensive or permanent. Maybe $200-$300 worth of stuff. I'd definitely take all the shelving with me when we moved or move it down to the laundry room if we do have a baby for diapers and what not.

Am I crazy for wanting to do this to possibly have to remove it in 9 months?

  • Nope! If you have the money, go for it! I wanted to keep Fin in our room for the first 6 months to decrease the risk of sids and for ease of nursing, so that would give you 15 months :) Plus, turning it into a closet sounds like an almost sure way of getting pregnant as soon as it's complete :)

  • I personally wouldn't turn it into a closet, BUT I did turn our spare room into a scrapbooking room for myself and now that I will be losing my scraproom soon I am bummed about it.  Those things are a nice little perk and are hard to give up once you get used to them.  However if you have enough clothes and the money then go for it.
  • If I could have a huge walk-in closet, I would!  I say do it!
  • I think it's a great idea. Go for it! We had one in our old house too and it also served as the laundry room with our washer/dryer so it was easy to wash & put clothes away.

  • Currently our laundry baskets are on the floor of our bedroom so that's an added bonus!

Technically we have the money (meaning we have no debt other than my car), but we're supposed to be on a saving kick right now. I think I'll look up some stuff and discuss with H. If I did two walls I could maybe leave them up if I did get PG and just block them with a curtain. Newborns don't walk, you know?

    Hmmm....

  • H is onboard, but has made a good point that if I don't do doors that shut the cats will get into my things. I don't want to shut the main door since the litterbox is currently in there (will go elsewhere if there's a baby ever, but I don't want to move it now since elsewhere is probably the laundry room with the door left open).  Will have to research this further.

    Logistic have hindered my mojo.

  • Is there another room you can move the litter box to?  If so, I think you should do it.

I've just started turning our spare room into a place for me to get ready/ craft room.  So far I've painted a vanity and the room.  I've debated on turning one wall into an area for clothes too.  Our bathrooms are small so I feel like I can actually get ready in there w/o having to leave my makeup in a travel bag.  I'm constantly having to chase my cats out of there though because they think it's fun to hide in all of my stuff.

Not really. We could put it in the guest room and move it when we have guests, but I don't really care for that idea. Our bathrooms are pretty small here - maybe the guest bathroom and then move it into our room when we have guests?

I would just put it in the laundry room and leave the door open, but we have a split level - right when you walk in the front door you can see down the stairs into the laundry room.

I think I'll just have to play around with it.

  • I"m late responding, but I don't think it would be silly at all.  Actually before Katrina, we used one of our spare rooms (we have a 3 bedroom house, and it was just the two of us back then) as a closet - added shelves all around the room, hanger rods, mirrors across one wall, our dressers were in there so we were actually able to fit a king sized bed in our bedroom.  I miss that most of all.  haha.  I loved it tho.  J still talks about moving the girls into one room and changing the room nearest to ours back into a closet again.  Ha, yeah like THAT will happen.  lol
