Let's talk Harry Potter

Liz, your FB post got me thinking.  What did everyone think of the last HP movie?  Did you read the book(s)?

Re: Let's talk Harry Potter

  • Yeah, it was disappointing for me. I was trying to explain it to H in the car on the way home. He liked, so I guess from the standpoint of someone who hasn't read the books, it was good because it was filled with action, but it really irked me. Maybe I'll get over it in a few years, but I really think I'm going to reread the book AGAIN to make myself feel better.

  • While it's been a while since I've read the books, I did read all of them.  When we walked out of the theater Sunday night, I was kinda like "meh" it was ok.  I told DH that they left so much out from the book but couldn't put my finger on what.  I think the movie was kind of a let down.

  • The books are BRILLIANT, but I hate the movies.  I only saw parts of the first movie, and it's too much of a kids' movie to me.  Maybe I should at least try to see the other movies, but I just have no desire.  I would re-read the books though in a heartbeat :)
  • I felt the same way. And I just read the book about 3-4 weeks ago, so I could catalog everything was different if you really want :P

I also feel like they rushed a lot of things, like seeing his friends dead after the first round of fighting. I was really starting to get teary eyed and then it moved on.

But I really liked what they did with Snape's memories. Him crying over Lily's body had me choked up and you really got to see how much he cared for her.

  • Allison, I totally agree that the books are awesome.  I've been meaning to re-read them but I haven't gotten around to it yet.  Maybe I will make myself do that this winter.

Liz, I agree with you about Snape's memories...that was pretty cool.

Maybe I need to watch all the movies consecutively and then see how it is.  At this point, I don't think it could be any more disappointing.

  • I read all the books and have seen the movies. I was actually debating on whether or not to read the final book before or after seeing the final movie. I did read the book first and I think maybe I should have seen the movie first. The final book and movie had a lot of differences I thought. Both DH and I kind of wanted a better fight & death scene for Voldemort. We were both like "That was it?"

I didn't like the last movie, but I still want the whole box set whenever that comes out. I love the other movies and only have 1 or 2 that are crappy quality (I got them at the $ store or something, they won't even play). Hopefully it's out by Christmas.

I JUST finished rereading the book on Thursday night and saw the movie Friday. I felt so gipped (sp??) that it was so short. I felt like the first part was more thorough. In hindsight I wish I would have read the book after and maybe I wouldn't have felt so bad about it.

I enjoy the movies as they get older because they get more mature and as Allison said, they are a kids movie early on but I think it changes as they progress. I will buy the box set too and I still love the books more. It just is nice to enjoy the bulk of the story in one evening sometimes rather than taking a week or two to get thru a book.

  • Lisa, I have no problem watching every HP marathon on TV every. single. time it comes on. DH doesn't like it so much, but there's usually nothing else on during the weekends.

  • I really enjoyed the movie!  But I had no expectations going in that they would stick to the book, because they never do, and they shouldn't because they are totally separate media.  In books you can delve so deep into characters and subplots, but in movies there is only so much time for everything and, in the end, it must be coherent. I mean, just look at Peter Jackson's LOTR: each is over 4 hours (extended edition), and it's still not enough for many LOTR fans because he had to get rid of so much, but it's too much for people that just want to watch the movies and not read the books.

IMO, I think they should have split the last 4 books into 2 movies to keep more of the plots and characters, but that would have required a lot more $$$ and those child stars can't look like little kids forever.

  • I actually really enjoyed the movie. I thought it was done very well. I DID feel that it could have been longer - around the 3 hour mark, that way they could have included more stuff from the book.

I wish they had cast different characters for the adult Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny and Malfoy. They barely looked any different (Malfoy looked awful). Hermione didn't look different at all, and Ginny just had different hair.

I do wish they would have included Ginny in the movie more. She was a big character in the last book and it was just disappointing that she wasn't more involved in the movie
