need help: maps

Hi ladies, I'm in need of some help.  I'm wanting to make some framed map art for a friend, but I have no idea what *kind* of map to get. Here's an idea of what I want...

image

I bought an atlas of the US, but it's not the right look.  I've tried searching online for gazetteer, topographic, and geographic maps, but I can't find the right one to get this look.  I would also need 4 different states so I'm hoping to find something that might have all 50 states together.  Is this something I could find at Barnes and Noble?  I could order it online if it is *perfect*, but I'm worried about one, my timeline (about 2 weeks) and two, that it won't be right and I will have wasted even more money.

 Any ideas?

Re: need help: maps

  • Hmm, I would probably search Ebay and look for local "area" maps.  Some of those look similar to the "zoomed" in sections on my atlas.

You can also try the Rand McNally Website and probably National Georgraphic to get an idea if they have what you are looking for.

  • You want to find the paper maps that fold. I'm not sure where to find them, other than at truck stops. (I randomly found one for NYC at Big Lots. In Kansas.)

  • Try antique stores, they tend to have a ton of maps. and most of them are very cheap.  Cheaper then buying an atlas as B&N.

  • I'd google map and then zoom out, then click the "print large map" button.  They won't be varied colors like the ones in the example, but they'll have roads, highways, etc.  You can always print on colored paper or use a wax based toner laser printer and watercolor yourself.

  •  A Gas station should have a display full of folding paper maps.

  • Do you belong to AAA?  If so, you can get them for free there.

Or you might want to look for a local map store.  We do have one here, but when my kids needed maps for school projects, we always got them at the store near my mom's when we visited, because they had the most awesome maps to choose from.

  • Thanks ladies!  I found most of the ones I needed at Barnes & Noble for a decent price (I don't know why I didn't call them before ordering online).  I'm still missing one, but now that I know which kind to buy, I can order online without wasting money.
