Do You Think The US Will Default?

Just curious what you ladies think about the budget "crisis" and raising of the debt ceiling.  Will the US default on it's debt, or is it a bunch of hot air coming out of Washington?

Re: Do You Think The US Will Default?

  • Originally I thought that there was absolutely no chance that our congressmen would let a default happen. The longer that this drags on though, I'm not so sure anymore. It doesn't sound like either side is willing to budge much on this. I find the whole thing to be quite frustrating. The politicians are making it into a political issue rather than just focusing on fixing the problem at hand.

    This

listening to both sides blame each other is getting old.

Agree--listening to the sides go back and forth is like listening to my middle schoolers argue and blame each other.  I find it both frustrating and disheartening to think that they seem to care more about pointing fingers than finding solutions.

  • Is it just me, or is the Republican party totally split on how to deal with it? How do you even begin to negotiate compromise when one side doesn't even know what it wants?

On a purely selfish note, having our currency rise against the American dollar is nothing but good for our trip to Hawaii next week. Stick out tongue

  • Also, as a grade 8 teacher, this made me laugh.

You're correct. The Tea Party Republicans are definitely opposed to John Boehner's plan. I'm not sure about how many of the other Republicans support or oppose his plan.

Also, I saw an article on Yahoo today that the Treasury said that they won't run out of money on 8/2 as reported, but instead they will have money to function until probably mid-August. Which to me means that they can continue to drag this whole thing out even longer. Ugh.

  • That's some very scary stuff.

I just saw your link for this on Facebook...I love it!

  • The problem with trying to reach consensus on any policy move--debt ceiling, sustained funding for science education (for Pete's sake, that shouldn't be a hard one!), any social program--is that elected officials aren't focused on governing. They're focused on the next election and pandering to their base. H worked in Congress for a year with a senior senator's office--they work hard, they just don't work smart. In other words, everything is purely reactive and progress is slow (if there's any at all).

As to the original question: having gone through the Great Gov't Non-Shutdown of 2011, I'm hoping it's more of the same. Something will get done, but it'll be virtually last minute. But these budget battles are just going to get uglier over the next couple of years.

This is so true. Kyle and I were just saying last night that we wish they would stop thinking about the next election and start thinking about what is best for the country. And that is a problem with both parties.

Agreed.  Did anyone see the footage of Gutierez and the immigration issue.  He's my Congressman, and I normally like him, but come on buddy, get the real work done first (i.e. the economy).
