Fire Ants

A friend of mine is having a huge fire ant problem in her house.  The ants dont seem to be interested in the Torro this time.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  She is OCD cleaning to try to stay on top of them, but it's not working.

Re: Fire Ants

  • I don't know if it works for fire ants, but my mom had a little bit of an ant problem and cured it by sprinkling ground cinnamon around the area they were coming in (window sill) and it worked like a charm. Maybe give it a try? Can't hurt anything!

  • Another 'natural' remedy that I've heard is sprinkling baking soda across the entry area--won't handle the mound, but might slow down the in-coming (though she might find partially exploded ants if they make it in after ingesting the soda).

  • She has fire ants "in her house?"  That's not very common since they mound in dirt.

not common, but it can happen.  i had fireants in my house, and i'm pretty sure they were all up under my house and driveway.  i got rid of the ones indoors with some super nasty spectracide (diluted it, dipped a little piece of cotton in it, and put it over the fireant's entrance).  i dislike resorting to the spectracide, especially inside, but i'm allergic to the little $#%##s, so they needed to be gone, and fast.  they never came back.  for the exterior of the house i sprinkled diatomatious earth around, which helps keep them at bay, but didn't get rid of them completely, because, like i said, i'm pretty sure my house was on top of a giant fire ant mound.  either that, or the little $##%#s were coming over from my neighbor's back yard, which was covered in fire ant mounds.
