Beginner at sewing: what do I need to get start
Hi all,
I want to start learning to do some simple sewing projects and need a shopping list. What would you recommend to buy to get started? I want to do some simple projects first, having in mind a zip wallet and a skirt. I have a sewing machine
- 1) fabric
2) safety pins
3) thread of course
4) The kind of pins with colorful round end ( i don't know what they are called)
5) Scissors?
6) Zipper
7) Elastic thread and elastic bands
Anything else?

There are several suggestions in the FAQs at the top of the board.
You need a seam ripper. Trust me.

ha wow. I have been lurking waiting for people to ask some of those questions. I looked for a FAQ but as a stickied post not up there!
thanks.
The FAQ link is in the green section at top of the board. The Nest doesn't do "sticky notes."

I would buy one of the beginner sewing kits, that will give you your pin cushion, seam ripper, thimble, tape measure, some pins (mine had safety and stick), needles, and sissors. The one I bought was just a small kit from Michael's (use coupons) and had a small pair of sissors. I still bought a nice pair, but the small work great for trimming threads or smaller cuts.
You're going to need thread to match your fabric choice and most likely some interfacing too.

Thank you ladies. I'm heading to Michaels and Joann today.
Does Michaels carry all these items (except for fabric)? Since I have a Michaels giftcard.
