Kids and toy guns

Will you let your child(ren) have/play with toy guns? Water guns, nerf guns, etc...

Re: Kids and toy guns

  • in a word, yes.
  • Yes, is there some sort of crazy bump rule about this I'm not aware of?
  • Yep.

  • Water guns and stuff? Sure. Anything that looks like a real gun? Nope.

  • I thought all kids played with some sort of toy gun growing up. SIL can not believe we will allow Luke to play with them. Her son is 3, he was given 2 water guns for his birthday and a few nerf guns. After the party, she told him (in front of us and ILs) that all guns are bad. She told him she would give all of his guns to the police, so no one gets hurt from the guns.

    I judge her for this.

  • We weren't allowed to have any guns or play with any toy guns when I was a kid. I think that need and water guns are fine.
  • I understand that some people are very anti-gun. I wanted to clarify that I am judging the way she is approaching this matter. Why not just tell him that guns are not to be played with?
  • Probably not like a mini glock or a mini AK47, but little plastic cowboy guns and stuff?  Of course.

Oh, for fuuck's sake. Those don't even look like real guns. I can see where the ones that look like real guns would make a parent uncomfortable, but like you said, parent & explain that guns are only for adults to use responsibly. This makes me sad for your nephew.

  • Kids turn barbies into guns ffs. I played with toy guns and so did everyone else I grew up with/am related to. None of us are violent people, own real guns, or have shot anyone.

Hmm I understand parents who are very anti-gun, but to give TOY guns to the police is just BSC.

FWIW, I'm totally on Team Let Kids Play With Toy Guns...

But the problem is when gun makers start making guns that look like toys... Like this:

  • Short answer, yes.  This may be an unpopular opinion and I may get some flames but DH is a hunter and has every intention of getting Wyatt a hunting rifile when he turns 4 or 5.  We have guns around our house (both for hunting and protection) and we plan to start teaching him very early about proper gun safety (both at home and in hunting safety courses) and that they are not toys and should be used with care, only when adults are around for supervision and should be respected.

Since you put it out there, I'm not going to flame you because I definitely get that your DH is a hunter and there are guns in your house and whatnot.  But I really think making that kind of decision now is kinda irresponsible.  4-5 yr olds don't always have the coordination to not miss a soccer ball while trying to kick it let alone being trusted to wield an instrument that could kill something/someone.  Flexibility as the years go on and judging his individual readiness should be considered here, in my opinion.

I totally agree with you about flexibility & readiness is different for each child.  I am in no way making a concrete decision that he will have a gun of some type at that age since that is more DH's plan than mine.  I am personally not a fan of guns and didn't grow up around them but since DH grew up with them and had them prior to us dating I can't just expect him to get rid of them.  DH thinks he will be ready at that age since he was that old when his grandfather gave him his 1st gun.  DH has a lot of "ideas" based on his upbringing (ie his mom was camping in a tent with him @ 6 weeks PP so I should be fine to do that as well).
