Going from 2 naps to 1...

G recently stopped napping in the morning and only napping in the afternoon. The problem is she went from napping 3hrs a day to 1hr a day. She takes her nap at 12:45ish with all the other kids but will be awake around 1:45 and cranky! She is still really tired and continues to say nigh nigh (meaning she's tired) for an hour or so.

Any ideas on how to keep her napping longer? I've tried leaving her in there and laying her back down and she gets up for a bit or a just sit in her room with her-but nothing works. I can't image CIO after she wakes up would work either. Does it just take time? Any ideas on what I can do? I feel like her sleep is SO off right now...she's always so tired! However refuses to go to bed earlier or nap earlier.

Re: Going from 2 naps to 1...

  • It does take time to adjust.  C had a few short naps on days that she only took one and there were days when she was so tired and still took two.  She has gotten herself in the swing and usually sleeps 2- 2 1/2 hours.  Her time isn't consistent.  Some days closer to one and other days she is head bobbing in her high chair at noon.

  • I found that when we transitioned E to one nap we had to start her "afternoon" nap earlier and gradually pushed it back later to our preferred 1:00 time. We started by putting her down around 11 and she would sleep until 1 or 2 and then just gradually pushed it back. Otherwise, if we put her down at 12:30 or 1 I think she was overtired and wouldn't sleep long and just be cranky. We had a few weeks of messed up lunches where she would either eat at 10:30 AM or 2 PM but it all worked itself out!
