Recaulking a bathtub

I have a few questions because I've read conflicting information:
1) Tape or no tape?  And if you use tape, do you let the caulk dry first or take it off immediately? (DIY Network and This Old House seem to disagree on the timing)
2) Fill the tub with water or no?

Re: Recaulking a bathtub

  • 1)  Tape is a personal preference for help in drawing the lines straight.  I don't use table to recaulk.

    2)  I don't fill the bathtub.  I do have a small container of hot water.  I finger wetted with hot water can be used to run down the bead of caulk.  This helps to get the caulk into every crack and smooths out the top of the caulk.

I do this as well.  We have never used tape.

I had never used tape while caulking before, but I just repainted our 2nd bath and wanted to recaulk everything, so I did try taping this time and it came out perfect!

I taped everything then caulked everything and then removed all the tape. (So, it had a little time to sit, only for the duration of me finishing up) and it really does look perfect.

I didn't fill the bathtub, I just ran the sink right next to the tub any time I needed to wet my finger to smoothe out the caulking.

    GL!

  • Thanks for the feedback and tips!  I think it came out okay- not great but workable.
