H has a business trip there in 2 weeks, and we're exploring the idea of me going with him. He's worried about me being on my own for a week while he's working, but I'm not sure how much he should be.
So, if anyone's there and wants to meet up OR anyone who has been there and wants to give me tips, please do so!
Re: Is anyone in Singapore?
I don't normally like the heat, but it's been stupidly cold here this 'summer'. As in, I'm wearing a heavy sweater today.
No, he's not worried about me being safe, just bored. He probably thinks I'll just hang out in the room all day or something. lol
Wedding stuff.
I would kill for sweater weather. Kill.
You could do a tour, go to their zoo (I have heard it is good at night), definitely shop, visit Temples, we were only there for 2 days but really enjoyed it.
Wedding stuff.
Explore the orchid garden.
Go to the Singapore Zoo. (Go back with H for the Night Safari)
Explore Arab Street, Little India, and Chinatown.
Eat lots of good street food.
Take the cable car to Sentosa Island and visit the aquarium.
Go see the Merlion. Because it's there. Not because it's particularly exciting.
And a recommendation from my last date, who used to live in Singapore: Go to Sentosa Island first thing in the morning to see them cleaning all of the trees. Because that's ridiculous. Not sure if it's true (surely some Googling or LonelyPlanet forum inquiries could come up with details), but it's crazy like Singapore!
A few things to keep in mind:
You can't hail a taxi on the street, and taxi stands typically just have a number you call to get the taxi to come. If you don't have a mobile, when you're downtown you pretty much have to catch cabs at hotels.
Don't chew gum. Don't even have gum. You gum-chewing criminal!
Yes, I'm here, as is txlion (I think is her name) and LeastFav. (I'm meeting her tomorrow! She just moved here a couple of weeks ago.)
I'd love to meet up. What days will you be here? National Day is on August 9th, so it'll be crazy in certain parts of the city that day. And my kids start back to school the next day, so I'll be freeeeee! (I am so over summer break.) Send me a PM and we'll make a plan if you decide to come.
(The taxi thing--it's mostly just the main roads of the Central Business District where you can't hail a cab on busy streets. Most places you can hail a taxi without problems.)
Good to know! We got stranded one night after having dinner with some friends, because we couldn't get a taxi to stop. When we finally found a cab stopped on a side street, the driver told us we had to either call or go to a stand, and we had to beg for a while before he agreed to take us.
Now, the million-dollar question: Is it true that they hose down the trees on Sentosa every morning? (Or was my date just making up interesting stories to make himself look good?)
I have no idea, but it really wouldn't surprise me! There are regularly traffic jams on the freeways because of tree trimming and "beautification."
and i'm painfully and terribly in the midst of godawful morning sickness for the last three days and haven't left the apartment. but you should also def eat at as many hawker centers as you can muster (i can't muster, they smell awful right now) and take a walk around the botanical gardens, clarke quay, and marina bay. marina bay is where the new casino is (if you're so inclined) and free to get in for foreigners. if you guys want to have any alcohol while you're here, take advantage of duty free because it's outrageously expensive. glass of wine in your hotel room, you know how it goes
