Ft. Leonard Wood

I will be going to my hubby's family day and graduation at FLW at the end of August! Im so excited!

Anyway, we are hoping that he will be able to go off post for familiy day so I was wondering if anyone had any recs on places to eat around there.

Thanks!

Re: Ft. Leonard Wood

  • I went to BCT and AIT there, and from what I can remember, there isn't much out there.  Like all I can remember is the burger king on post, lol.  Hopefully someone else that's been stationed there can help you out.
    Shot first, questions later.
  • K went to BCT and AIT there as well. PP is right, there's not much there. I think we went to Cracker Barrel to eat during family time and it was packed with other graduates and families.

There's a city nearby that has more options, but I don't remember if we went there during BCT graduation or after AIT, when he had more freedom.

  • We recently PCS'd away from FLW.

The neighbouring town is St. Robert.  In St. Robert, you can find a Panera, a Ruby Tuesday's, a Pizza Hut, a mediterranean place called Mama Mia's (I think - can't really remember the name of the place, but I liked their food... it's a tiny place, mostly take-out business).  There's a Cracker Barrell, and Ryan's, as well, and most of the normal fast-food type places and a few diners.  There is a place called chopstix, which is a fairly typical chinese buffet with the addition of a "fresh" bar, where you can fill a bowl with raw foods and have it cooked in front of you.

There is a decent sushi place near the Panera (again, can't remember the name).

There is a local chain called Miller's Grill, which is quite nice.  It's basically normal american food, and I'd pick it over Ruby Tuesdays.

There is also a steak place that is called something like Aussie Jack's.

If he can go a teeny bit further away, one exit north of town is a BBQ place called Sweetwater BBQ.  Yummy.

There are also a few mexican, chinese, and korean places in town that I never had the opportunity to try.  We really were not at FLW for very long.

Our typical go-to places for eating out were Sweetwater BBQ, Miller's Grill, and Mama Mia's.  Panera was were my knitting group would meet (and I suspect they're still meeting there on thursday evenings).  We only tried the sushi place during out last week there.  Had we tried it sooner, it would have been on our go-to list of places to go, as well.

Ruby Tuesday's there offers a military discount.  10%, I think.  In case you choose to go there.  Ther servers often guess (and if your DH is in uniform, it's pretty easy to guess), but it's worth knowing about.

I think St. Robert has been built up quite a bit lately.  The Panera opened up while we were there.

Oh, and if he can go even further afield, there is a town a bit north/east on 44, called Rolla.  It's bigger than St. Robert, and does have more dining options (it's a college town, too), but I don't know if he'd be able to go that far.  I'm also less familiar with the options there.  I know there is a decent steak place (Colton's) and a decent italian place (Napolito's), but never made it elsewhere.

  • Where he can go will depend on the unit.  We were only allowed to go to St Robert for Family Day.  They were afraid we'd be late getting back if we went to Rolla. Keep in mind that was 6 years ago.

He should be able to go off post if they have earned it.  Just remember, it can be taken away if they screw up.  The unit that graduated before us was only allowed to stay in the BTN area because a bunch of them were caught with contraband the week before grad.  That's basically a 1/2 mile radius.  It sucked for their families, but they were at fault.

  • I live locally, about an hr or so from FLW actually. There isn't too much out here, but Rolla is a nice place. There is a steakhouse to die for right off the interstate called Serloin Stockade, has a big cow in front of the restaraunt, pretty decently priced too.
