When did you start letting LO sleep with a pillow?

Cam used to sleep fairly well in his crib until he was getting ear infections every other week.  Since then he's been next to our bed in the RNP and/or in our bed.  He hasn't had an ear infection since May (yay!) and he's getting really restless at night and seems like he wants more space.  It's causing me to lose sleep too.

We want to start getting him back in his bed (which is used as a laundry basket right now Embarrassed ).  I will see how it goes, but I honestly think he would do better with a pillow.  He likes to be on the pillow next to me in our bed.  It really doesn't worry me much because I hear and feel his every little move.  When we were at my IL's over the 4th, he slept in a PNP for part of the night and did much better when he had a pillow (which I allowed when I was in the room and awake).

I don't know why I'm rambling so much, but I'm curious when everyone started letting their LO use a pillow.  Cam will be 1 next month.   TIA!

  • I think you'd be safe to do a small pillow without a case.. at that age, I'd be worried about him rolling around and getting his head stuck in the case (but thats probably me overthinking things). I think we gave Ava one around 18 months but Aubrey is 18 months and doesnt have one yet because she never stays the same direction in her crib (although maybe she would if I got her a pillow?)...

  • I've been wondering this, too. Natalie is 2 and doesn't sleep with a pillow because she never stays in the same place. DH is against it because he thinks it will hurt her neck to sleep on one. She does fine without, but I think she would be okay with one since she loves laying on them when she's on our bed or the couch.

  • I have been wondering this too.  Maddie also sleeps better with a pillow, now she uses one of mine.  Where can I find a "child" pillow?  I haven't started looking yet, so any suggestions are welcome.  I think that Shea made one, but I don't have the time or the skill for that matter for that.
  • We gave C a pillow when we transitioned from the crib to the toddler bed at 14 months.  The pillow we use has a sewn-on cover that's not removable, but I don't think it would matter.  He did great with it and I wish we would have tried it earlier in the crib.

  • E started sleeping with a pillow around 15 months. We started with a small one that was pretty firm because I was still a little nervous about it but it did help her sleep a lot better.

  • Well to start with it, it doesn't seem like Cam would already be a year next month.  Seems like he should be about half that!  As far as the pillow goes, we didn't give G one until he started sleeping in a bed. Of course he spent lots of nights in bed with us so he had one then.  LIke you, at times when he was sick this seemed to help.  I still haven't given C one.  She moves around a lot so doesn't seem like she would use it.  She falls asleep on her tummy, often with her arms under her and butt in the air.  I don't think for her the pillow would do much.

  • We gave Olivia a pillow when she moved to a toddler bed (well the matress on the floor, she refused to sleep in the bed for about 4 months, but she would sleep next to the bed-go figure!). She was about 14-15 months old I believe.

  • I gave Ana one at 11mos because she became used to sleeping with/on me. By giving her my pillow, it seemed to simulate someone sleeping next to her. She actually doesn't lay her head on it that often. She's a tummy sleeper and sleeps with her head on the mattress and her belly and legs on the pillow.  lol!

  • I gave Wes one a couple of weeks ago (16 mo) because he kept balling up his blanket to use as a pillow. It's small and has no case. He still balls up his blanket. :)

  • G started sleeping with her pillow pet about 6 weeks ago. We have the Angelcare monitor which made me feel better about it. She sleeps on it sometimes, sometimes she puts her feet on it....
