BR: Would you take a 4 1/2 month old camping?

We are going camping for a weekend next month with the IL's and they want us to bring Teaghan but I am not sure.

We will be camping in tents and I am not sure how well that will work out with a 4 1/2 month old.

Would you take a baby that young camping?

  • Sorry to say, but I would not.

Even bringing a 9-month old overnight in a hotel was a PITA... and we had a pack n' play to keep her in!  I don't know how spacious your tent might be, but I just couldn't imagine trying to fit Chris, myself, AND Sami in a small, contained spot for a night.  Not to mention packing for a camping trip can be ridic... adding all the baby necessities on top of that would just be insane.

IMO, I would wait to bring her camping... I think you (and she) would enjoy the time better that way.

  • My family used to camp all the time when I was little. My brother camps a lot with his son and wife too, but I'm not sure how young all were. I say it depends on the campsite. The one we used to go to had a sandy area for the tent and a bathhouse of sorts (it's been a while since I've been there). So it wasn't like you had to pee by a tree or anything. I say go for it! I think if you bring the pack and play, she'll be fine in there. Just watch out for the bugs, apparently I almost snacked on a huge green worm when I was a campin' baby.

ETA: of course, I haven't had my little guy yet, so I don't know how hard having a 4 1/2 month old is normally... so my opinion is a little skewed. But if the IL's want you to bring her, I'm assuming they wouldn't mind helping out with her.

  • Clearly I'm going to be in the minority here, but yes, I would.  Might not mean anything because I don't have a kid, but we've been camping with tons of friends who have brought their babies.  And to be honest, a 4 month old is way less of a PITA because they aren't mobile yet.  You can throw down a big blanket in the grass and play with them and they won't go anywhere.  Won't have to worry about them getting as dirty as when they're crawling.

Our friends have pretty big tents, they just bring the PNP for the kiddos to sleep in.  It's pretty mild up in the mountains here, don't have to worry about the kdis getting too hot.  In fact, most have propane heaters for the tent in case it gets too chilly.

It's not impossible.  Bring a lot of baby wipes for easy clean ups :)

I completely agree with you. We just got back from 4 days in a hotel and I felt like I had to pack so much for her I can't imagine everything we need for camping. I think we def need to wait on this one.
