PCS Question

We gave a friend POA to supervise the movers who packed our apartment in Egypt. They finally delivered our stuff yesterday and we're missing a lot of stuff. Everything listed on the inventory is here, but there is a lot of stuff that I know was there that didn't make it here and isn't listed on the inventory. The inventory is also very general - there were 20 boxes labeled "books" that included books, plaques, photos, pillows, model airplanes, etc...

What recourse do I have about the missing stuff? I'm guessing TMO/the movers are not responsible since everything listed on the inventory is here. Who do we talk to about this?

Re: PCS Question

  • Contact the carrier.

If you have photos of any of the stuff that was in your apartment, you'll have a stronger case.  The photos don't have to be specifically of the item you're missing, but chances are, say you're missing a lamp, you may have a photo of your dog, but the lamp is in the background.  Flip through your pictures and see if anything sticks out.

  • I am pissed, but honestly, she'd never been to our house so I can't expect her to have known what was ours and what the apartment came with since it was furnished. We had originally given POA to someone else, but he tried to steal several hundred dollars from us so we revoked it and gave it to someone else. I guess we can't win for losing.

  • Talk to the Family Readiness Officer or Ombudsman, whatever your husbands command has!  I Would also talk to Legal and TMO and the Chaplain.

In the future when you (or really anyone moves) make an inventory of your items, take pictures of everything and if it is electronic make a short video of it working.  This will help with not only missing items but broken items.  Good luck!

That wasn't possible in her case, as she was evacuated from Egypt. Generally good advice though.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
