Ali re: Big Red (AKA my Edge)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!  I bought mine in August of 2007 so, it's almost paid off which is a plus.  I bought it the first year they made them.  So, I will say from being in some newer ones they have improved some things.  I also got the "base" version.  Nothing fancy but it was all I could afford at the time ( I literally got my teaching job 10 days before).

Pro's - great mid size.  The only thing I can't fit in my car are big pieces of furniture.  It has an arm rest in the middle of the back the comes down and has cup holders.  No one ever sits back there but I think it's really cool (I'm easily amused).  The back seat are a 70/30 split which is handy and they both will fold down when needed.

Con's - gas mileage.  It's pretty standard for the type of car.  It has a LOT of horsepower so that tends to suck down the gas.  Really, the gas mileage isn't that bad - it's the fact of how I drive it.  My drive to work is 22 miles and only 4 is on the highway.  It's a lot of stop and go.  With that being said, I fill it up once a week if I'm driving to/from work and just a little around town.  It gets anywhere from 18-24 MPG depending on the driving circumstances.

The seat in the back does not fold down completely flat.  It's still elevated a little.  It's only been a problem for me once when I needed something to be completely flat ( a gigantic cake).

My college roomie has the 2011 Edge SEL.  I would say the biggest negative to hers is the SYNC.  I thought it sucked.  However, hers has the backup camera which is helpful and she also has this button in the back the pops the back seats down.  In mine you have to manually do it and this really is just the difference in the fact she has a higher end version of the car.  She also has ambient lighting which serves no purpose but is really cool.

The one thing I would do different - buy the model up from mine.  I wish mine has the seat button but I also wish it had remote start and the button on the key fob to open the back hatch.  It's REALLY hard to open when your hands are full and you can sit anything on the bumper because the hatch hits it.

I don't care for the sunroof in them because I live in Texas - it lets too much heat in.  Heated seats would be good for you but I'd prefer to have cooled seats, lol!  I love how it drives. Turning radius is great.  Windshield is big which is an issue in the summer (again, heat) but you get used to it.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.  I really haven't had an issue with the tires lasting at all - it was simply the fact that I must drive through lots of construction or something.

My next car will be an Acadia though.  While the Edge is a good mid size, I have found that if you have 2 adults, a carseat, and a dog - it's a little small.  The back will handle a big stroller but not much else.  So, we want more than 1-2 kids more like 3 or 4 which is why I'll be going to a bigger vehicle with 3rd row seating.

That's a lot of info - sorry!

Re: Ali re: Big Red (AKA my Edge)

  • We have a 2010 Edge and LOVE it.  It has plenty of room for us, baby, and two doxies.  I like the SYNC once I figured out how to use it.

  • Thanks for the info! The hardest thing is the price tag for me. I've just never spent that much on a car, so it's scary! I think everything should cost $13K or less Big Smile So we'll see!

  • doxie's would fit - labs and toddler "fit" but shrek's tail was up in my niece's face the whole time.  He was sure what to do with someone back there with him.

Yeah, the price tag was hard for me because it was the first car I've ever bought.  Up until then I had a hand me down car to get me through college and then shared with my mom for a couple months while I got my teaching job.  My monthly payment is definitely high but I also had 0 down on it. The best time to buy is in August because it's the end of the model year.  So, next month you'd want to buy the 2011 as the 2012 comes out etc.  Just watch them, they'll come down.  The version I have is about 5k less than I paid for it now - I think.
