Moms- as the school year is coming

What is your schedule like for you kid?  This 'school' thing is new for me and I am getting anxious about having down time.  Is this schedule crazy?  Obviously the playgroups are not mandatory.

Monday

4 pm dance

Tuesday
10 am gymnastics
11:30 am swim lessons

Wednesday
9 am to 2:30 pm school

Thursday

Friday
9 am to 2:30 pm school

Re: Moms- as the school year is coming

  • For me that would be a bit much.....you're going to be doing a LOT of carting around and my child (at F's age) would have definitely needed more downtime between school & activities....but to each their own.

FYI, K would sleep at LEAST 2, sometimes 3, hours after school, and we went 1.5 hours LESS per day than you'll be going.

They "nap" at school.  Dance and school are both within walking distance of our house.  I am happy to drop gymnastics, but DH is insisting.  He is happy to drop dance, but I am insisting.  The compromise is to do both...sigh.

  • Since playgroups are optional and you can always go with the flow and see how she is feeling and decided whether to go or not.  The only thing on your schedule that I think is a bit much is having gymnastics at 10 then swim lessons at 11:30.   That is a bit a much at that age, especially around lunch time.

If you are insistent on swimming, I'd see if there is another time.

  • My DD is much older than F, but here's what you can look forward to in a few years :-)

Mon 7:45-8:20am running club; 8:40-3:40pm school, 3:45-5 Math & Science club

Tues normal school hours, 5:30-7:30pm soccer practice

Wed  7:45-8:30 Art club; school, 3:45-5 Drama club

Thurs normal school hours, Kippers (recycling/community service) every 3rd Thursday until 5; 7:30-9:30pm soccer practice

Friday 7:45-8:30am Kippers, normal school hours, 6-8 pm group soccer skills training.

Saturday: soccer games, always in Katy, Spring, or Humble

    Whew.

  • If she is used to being out and about a lot, I suspect she will do fine.

My son went to school from 9:15 to 2:15 last year and will be going again this fall. They do nap there, but he quit napping there in the spring (he would just lay on his mat awake), so he came home to nap almost every day after school. It's just something to think about...I stopped planning stuff after school when I could avoid it because he still needed that nap. It was crucial to the sanity of our house!

  • IMO, that is too much to commit to.  If it were me, I'd only do school MWF, spread dance/gymnastics/swim between TTh, and don't commit to the playgroups.

  • Natalie would personally be fine with that, and I like to stay busy as well. The only issue I'd have is gymnastics and swim lessons so close to each other on Tuesdays.

  • i don't even know yet...lol.  we have kids at two new-to-us schools this year and at this point, don't know what activities/groups they'll be in.  hoping to have a volleyball player, and i know we'll have a karate kid and a band kid.

the only thing in your schedule that would stress me out is the gymnastics then swimming.   but it depends on how long gymnastics lasts... if it's 30 minutes that's one thing (she'll be able to calm down and have a snack and get there and change) but if gymnastics is a long class, i would second-guess that particular day's schedule.  you can probably rest assured she'll nap well on that day!

  • It looks like a bit much only because both of my girls still need long naptime.  There was no way that Emmy could have done 9am-2:30 school and then dance at 4pm on the same day (especially at F's age).  I think she would have a meltdown.

And if you could spread out the Tuesday activity a little more giving a little break on the body in between.  Since it's almost be 1.5 straight hours of physical activity which may be much for a 2 year old.  I was going to enroll Emmy and gymnastics and dance almost back to back but the owner said that they would prefer it was on a different day just because she's so young.

For Emmy her schedule is (I only take her to stuff on the weekends though):

    M-F School from 8-noon

    Thurs:  Swimming lessons at 3pm

    Sat:  Gymnastics at 10am

    For Ally:

She only has library story time on Tuesday at 10am and gymnastics on Sat at 10am.  If the storytime thing doesn't work out, then she'll start gymboree again.  But I'm wanting something for free because it starts adding up with 2 kids!

  • that is a bit much for me, but i also work, so who's to say what my schedule would be like if i were a sahm.

    maddy's schedule will be:

    W, TH: 930a - 230p - MDO and then and dance 1 day/wk and probably swim 1 day/wk, we just haven't decided which days.

on a side note - has F "auditioned" for the met yet?  how did she do?  we just got a reminder about fall registration so that crossed my mind....

  • If you are concerned, you could always do one activity one semester and the other the next.... or maybe do swim only a partial semester.  I personally like to give some down time for creative play.... I have read that it's important for kids to have time to be "bored" and learn to come up with their own things to do.... of course that can always be at a park with friends.

That said, I think it's great that you are exposing her to so much.  Maybe she will naturally gravitate towards something.  I would be ready to pull her from something, if she appears to need it, but she may thrive on it all.

I'm with the majority; I think it looks fine except for the gymnastics and swim so close together.  Any way you could do one in the morning and one in the late afternoon?

I'm not sure what Char's extracurriculars will be in the fall yet.  I'm signing her up for dance for sure (she keeps bugging me to do ballet and tap), and continuing swim lessons...and I might do gymnastics, too.

She's in school M/W/F but full days, and then she's with me Tues/Thurs.  Our schedule will be something like this:

    Mon: school 10 am-5 pm

Tues: (right now we have Bible study where she goes to childcare) Playdates, grocery shopping, etc.  Probably swimming from 6-6:30 like she has now.

    Wed: school 10 am-5 pm

Thurs: Bible study in the mornings where she'll be at childcare, lunch out, playdates/etc.  Probably swimming from 6-6:30.

    Fri: school 10 am-5 pm.

So that leaves Tues/Thurs for us for dance and gymnastics, unless I decide to do it after school one day.

We're a "like to be busy" family, too, so I honestly think it's fine with the exception of those two Tuesday activities back to back.

I agree that your Tuesday is too crowded, especially considering it's at lunchtime. If you can't rearrange that schedule, definitely give her a nice big snack before gymnastics, and maybe even a little one in between.  (Not enough to make her sick at swimming, of course.)

The only other thing I'll say is that school makes them way more tired than you'd think. Even with a nap at school, it's possible that she'll still be quite tired after school, at least at first. Even now at 6 and 4, my kids are pretty cranky after school.  Part of it is hunger, but it's definitely fatigue as well.

I would just go with that schedule and see how she does.  You know her disposition, so you probably know whether she needs more downtime or less.  My kids absolutely need downtime to recharge, but every kid is different.

  • I think Mondays will depend on if she naps at school or not. Eloise always took a nap at school until this summer, even though she's hardly been napping at home for the last 2 years. So when we did MDO hours, she was actually more rested when I picked her up than she would have been if she stayed home. Just make sure you have a snack in the car if she's not having one after nap.

  • I think she can handle this schedule fine. Is it just for the fall? I would anticipate that you may grow weary of three weekly commitments (swim/dance/gymnastics) by the new year. This would be a tough schedule if you were juggling another child but since you have one, I think you'll be good.

  • And I thought OUR schedule was insane.  I can't imagine carting her all over for 3+ different activities.

    Mon-Friday regular school hours 7:30am-2:30pm

Cheer is moved from Monday to Sunday (at 1pm - there goes my whole day).

Wednesday she has an hour of tumbling then 2 hours cheer practice.  So 6-9pm

During competition season we will have at least 1 extra practice a week for 2 hours.

She is also doing theatre this year so I am sure there will be plenty of after school rehearsals for plays and competition.
