chicken pox vax

Sooo, DS had his 12 month vaccinations exactly 10 days ago.  Today I noticed a rash that looks like chicken pox (small spots scattered over his body, especially back and tummy, few on face, ears, arms, legs).  The only really noticeable spot is his back and tummy. Anyways, I called the pedi and the nurse told me that it is rare, but possible, to have a rash like that appear 10-14 days after the vax. She also said it was not contagious.  However, now I've read online more about it and I'm getting mixed reviews as to whether it's contagious or not.  Also, the side effect listed was "a few spots" not like the 30+ that DS has.  One site even mentioned "breakthrough varicella."  The CDC site doesn't say anything about the possibility of actually getting a mild case from it so that's so help.  My main question is should I be keeping DS away from other kids until the spots start to go away in case he might be contagious, or should I just go with the nurse and assume he's not contagious.  I'd have way less a problem of not worrying about it if he only had a few (like 5-10) spots.

Re: chicken pox vax

  • Katen got a case of the measles from her MMR shot that some Dr's combine with teh varicella shot at about 10-12 days after her immunization. The rash was all over like you explained and they were little dots but not puffy/blistery like chix pox. Then a few days later she developed red eyes, a goopy cough, etc. They told us she was not contagious either but I kept her home just in case.

  • I don't know why measles didn't cross my mind.  I remember that happened to Katen but for some reason I didn't even consider that option! His spots aren't blistery either.  I'll keep an eye out for the other symptoms you mentioned...  I ALMOST had them split up the MMR and Varicella shots like I did with M, but decided to just do it together this time to avoid another trip to the dr.  Not to say it would've made any difference, but I wonder...
  • I hate to be that person - and I by no means intend to bring any unnecessary worry....but this same exact thing happened to us last week. DS had his 15 mo check up, I noticed a rash. I chalked it up to his vaccines. Well, turns out he had hand, foot and mouth which apparently is going around the metro like crazy! So, I would watch for a fever or more rash/sores. Sorry to be a Debby-downer, I just felt so terrible that I waited so long to take him to the pedi thinking it was a vaccine reaction :(. Worst feeling ever.
