Shaving and makeup poll

Just curious (and bored) how often do you shave and/or wear makeup?  Does it make you feel more womanly or sexy when you do these things or are you pretty comfortable without?  Do you think women have a duty to "take care of themselves" in these ways?  What does your DH think about it (mostly shaving)?

In the summer I'd say I shave once or twice a week and in the winter (long pants!) it goes down to about once a month...haha...if that.   I really wear makeup about once every two weeks, but I'll wear mascara and eyeliner more often.  I do feel sexier when I shave or wear makeup, but I don't feel sloppy when I haven't done those things and I think it makes me feel even sexier when I do get around to doing them if that makes sense.

DH never comments on my leg (or other) hair and when I bring it up he just shrugs and says he didn't notice.  But I have a friend whose BF always comments when she has just the tiniest bit of stubble.  Does your DH's opinion on this impact how often you shave?

I know it's a mundane poll, I'm just bored and curious!

Re: Shaving and makeup poll

  • My leg hair is blonde and soft, so DH barely even notices whether or not I shave, which honestly makes me shave even less! why bother if he doesn't care and I don't either. I probably shave my legs 2-3x/month. Underarms-I shave probably weekly.  Bikini area, I shave a few times a month as well. DH has a preference with underarms and bikini area :)

I don't think women have any more or any less obligation to shave than the men do. That being said, a little trim here and there for both sexes, never hurt anyone!

Makeup-I usually wear mascara every day, but not much else.  I like to get all dolled up every now and then, but somehow DH finds me sexy when I just roll out of bed with no makeup and morning breath. So I feel pretty confident and sexy even without making too much of an effort.

  • I have an almost 3 year old.  Shower time is a commodity.

I shave every other day, opposite of washing my hair.  I will shave my underarms every day if I am wearing sleeveless dresse/tops

I wear mascara and face powder every day.  I will add base and eyeliner if I am meeting friends out, about 3x a week.  I will add shadow and lipgloss if I am doing something professional, 1x a week,.

  • I shave once or twice a week. I'd do it less because I'm always in jeans but I've been going to the gym and wear crops so I shave.

I don't wear makeup unless I leave the house. Then it's sometimes tinted moisturizer and blush, always powder, eyeliner, and mascara. If I'm going out at night with friends then I might wear foundation and eyeshadow.

DH doesn't really notice if I don't shave my legs unless it's really bad. lol. But sometimes when I have just shaved he'll mention that I'm "so smooth."

I agree with you on this point!  ;)

  • I shave once or twice a week and wear mascara every day. I don't often wear more makeup than that, maybe to go out to a nice restaurant, for a family meal, or if we're going to the theater.

I do these things for me. I feel more comfortable doing so. Being kind of redneck and from the woods, I don't start feeling womanly until I put a dress on. Smile

Honestly, I never really learned how to put on lots of makeup and don't really feel comfortable when I do. However, I bought some Benefit product samplers last week and have been having fun!

FH says he doesn't know why I do "silly" things like putting on makeup. He's never said anything about shaving. He's one. hairy. dude. and has to shave his beard every other day. I like the mountain man look but his mom makes comments. Oh, image-conscious Spain!

  • I probably shave my legs and underarms 3-4 times per week regardless of the season.  Even in the winter I'm in shorts and tank tops a lot at the gym.  I personally just like how shaved legs and smooth underarms feel, so I do it regardless of what my fiance thinks (we're long distance anyway).

I've recently started using an epilator on my legs (like an electric razor, except with rotating tweezer things), and even though it's more time consuming than shaving, and is a little uncomfortable at first, I've found that it has allowed me to shave less often -- it'll probably go down to about twice a week.   I won't use it on my bikini area or underarms though, because it is a little too painful for that!

Makeup?  I wear makeup every day, but it is VERY minimalist (tinted moisturizer with SPF, powder, mascara, light eyeshadow -- no lips, eyeliner, or blush).

I don't think that women have an OBLIGATION to shave or wear makeup, though I do think that guys appreciate it as it shows that we like to take care of ourselves.  If my fiance went a week without shaving, I'd probably politely ask him to get rid of the stubble.    However, especially when it comes to makeup, I think most guys prefer the natural/minimalist look, and not someone who is super high-maintenance.

Haha.   Comments like that from men make me happy.  :)  DH has pretty much the same attitude towards makeup.  He likes it when I wear it, but thinks it's not something necessary everyday.

And I agree with Avion that it seems men usually prefer the minimalist look when it comes to women and makeup.

  • I shave my underarms in the shower every other day.

I used to get regular leg & bikini waxes and not shave for 3 weeks-ish between waxes but it's just not possible in summer.

I should shave my legs every third day to keep smooth but will sometimes skip it for a week or so, especially in winter. I do the bikini area every week or so but often have to wait a bit longer as I easily get a rash.

I don't wear make-up daily (mostly because I can't be bothered in the morning) - I could do with a little bit of powder though.

I wear foundation and/or powder, mascara, lipstick/gloss & sometimes eyeliner or eyeshadow when going out.

H definitely appreciates it if I'm not stubbly (and just deals with it if I am) and absolutely prefers light/minimal make-up.

  • I shave my legs/arms/bikini area 2x/week.  I can't stand the stubbly feeling if my legs touch each other while I'm sleeping.  I shave my armpits everyday.  I would get a full body laser hair removal if I could.  I'm not a hairy person, I just don't like to have any hair at all really.  H doesn't care either way.

I wear makeup probably 3x/week.  I might put on some mascara and lip gloss on the other days just to make myself feel good.   H always jokes when we're about to head out the door and says "well, are you going to put some makeup on?"  He thinks I don't need any, but what does he know!?!

  • I shave a few times a week but I dont really pay a lot of attention so I always forget sections of my legs.

If I am home or just in the neighborhood then I dont put on makeup. I use sunscreen everyday.

  • I shave my legs and pits at least a couple times a week, and I'm not very hairy so that's generally enough to keep it looking reasonable in those areas. DH has never commented that I seem hairy (or not hairy) and I don't think he notices when I haven't shaved, or maybe he notices and doesn't care or doesn't want to offend me. As far as makeup, I bother with it about once a week these days, when I feel like I have the time or if we are going out somewhere. DH always notices when I wear it and says something like "wow, you look great!"' So maybe that means I should wear it more. But he would never say "you look ugly, go put on makeup" obviously.
  • I didn't shave until I got pregnant, I used to use a machine to pluck my legs :) Now I shave twice a week, if I was in SC or GA again I'd do it every day as I'd wear skirts every day.

I wear makeup when I'm going somewhere special, last time was for my maternity photos http://stevetroes.com/danic12/ and the time before that for our wedding :)

  • I shave my armpits at least every few days. I shave my legs every week, or every two in the winter. Thankfully DH doesn't care.

I have to wear mascaa. My eyelashes are blonde and without any mascaa I look pale and sick. At the daycare I would usually still wear some shadow to help the eyes. Now that I'm at the bank I wear primer and powder, mascara, and shawdow.

Women don't have a duty to take care of themselves for the sake of someone else. They, like men, have a duty to meet the hygiene and appearance requirements of their job. Beyond that they should put in the effort to match the desired impression.

I just don't like when a woman puts in little/no effort on their appearance and then complains that they "aren't as pretty" as someone else or they "don't get compliments like so-and-so". Pick a side and stop complaining. Go totally natural and own it, or put in some effort to compliment your appearance (no need to go overboard, though).

  • In the summer I shave twice a week or so...in the winter once a month.  I have really light hairs on my legs so you can't really see them, but you could feel them if you brushed up against me.  DH would rather I have smooth legs all the time, he even suggested maybe I should get my legs waxed as that would "last longer".  Then I told him how expensive that is and he has changed his tune.

I wear makeup pretty much everyday.  There might be a day or two during the week that I don't because I am not going anywhere specific so I don't plan on being "seen".  In the summer I do dial it down (tinted moisturizer, pressed powder, eye shadow and mascara) since I basically sweat it off during the day.

I do feel more "put together" when I have makeup on.  I do feel more "touchable" when I have just shaven my legs...I wouldn't say sexier.

I remember when I was in high school I wouldn't leave the house to get the mail at the end of our driveway if I didn't have makeup on.

  • I shave my underarms every other day.  I have somewhere around 36 hairs that grow on my legs, so I shave them when I notice the hair--maybe once a week, sometimes less.  Everything else (brow, lip, bikini) gets waxed monthly.  The only bit H ever notices is the bit I get waxed.

I put makeup on maybe once a week if I am going somewhere.  I haven't worn it regularly in a long time.

  • Embarrassed Weeeell.  I wear makeup every day.  Foundation, blush, powder, eyeshadow, mascara... the works. I guess I'm the odd man out on this.

Shave my armpits every day, everything else a couple times a week.  H never says anything either way.

  • During the summer I shave my legs and underarms pretty often. I'll wear makeup when I leave the house, but how much depends on where I am going.

Most at one time would be - foundation, eyelid primer, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, blush, eyebrow pencil, sometimes lip gloss. If I am going to the post office or something, just foundation and mascara.

  • I shave my legs once a week and pits twice a week. Hubby doesn't really care or notice if I go longer than that (doesn't happen often except for the 3 or 4 months after I had my DD, showers were hard to come by when it was just she and I and at that point I was up a lot at night that it wasn't worth it to me to get up early just to get a good long shower in. Make-up I don't do at all, not even mascara. Never had the desire to and frankly it just makes me feel dirty and not sexy (not saying it looks dirty on other people (unless applied with putty knife :-)) it just isn't for me). Plus it would just be another thing to do in the morning. My hubby doesn't care and really prefers no make up anyway. I've never felt "less pretty" because I don't wear make-up

I would wear makeup every day if I worked.  It pretty much just depends on when I'm leaving the house if I wear makeup or not.

  • I don't wear makeup very often. Usually only if we're going on a date, to a large family function or if I'm at a gtg with people I haven't seen in awhile. DH prefers me not wearing makeup anyway. If I were working, I'd wear makeup every day.

When I do put makeup on, it's generally eyeliner, mascara, light colored eyeshadow and carmex. Lipstick rarely features unless it's a light coffee color. Nothing else seems to go well with my uneven skin tone, and I don't like the feeling of foundation/powder/tinted moisturizer on my face.

I shave my armpits every other day, legs once a week and bikini every few days. DH never notices the extra hair unless it's been two weeks or more since I've shaved. By then it's bothering me to the point I can't take it anymore, but he rarely comments.

  • I shave every day. I can't stand the slightest stubble.

I wear make up every day. Not full on, but I need foundation, powder, eyeshadow, and mascara. If I go out, I put on eyeliner.

DH doesn't really notice too much. I do it more for myself. I freaked when I had a broken shoulder and couldn't shave under that arm well for a few weeks. DH was helping shave then.

Same here, except I have no problem going to the grocery store or to run errands sans makeup. If I'm going out with friends or to dinner or something I will put it on.
  • Here's another twist on the question:

Does this change in your home town vs. where you live now?

I can't leave the house without showering in either spot.
However, I have no problem forgetting makeup or going out in flip flops and a sweat shirt and/or one of my university tee shirts at home. This is something I'd never do in Spain.

Giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirl, I "put on my face" errrday too. And I don't even work. I just love doing it. I look prettier (so I feel more confident) and it's a fun way to express myself.

My Benelux girls can tell you all about it. I think I wore more makeup than all the women in the NL put together.

I am more confident and comfortable with how I look here and am more likely to wear less makeup here than in TX. Most likely because my friends and coworkers in TX wore more makeup too, so I would have been the oddball there

Actually, the Boston area is much more laid back than my home town. Grew up in Greenwich, CT. I don't think I'd go out without makeup there, everyone is dressed up and I am bound to run into someone I know. Full makeup, best jewelry, and nice clothes.

Here I will get dressed up, but I wouldn't feel weird in t-shirt, jeans, mascara and lip balm (my college uniform).

  • I shave probably once a week....arms, legs and bikini line.  I don't do it any more often because I get horrid razor rash, regardless of the newness of the razor, the different shaving creams, etc.  Doesn't matter...my body doesn't like being shaved.  I'm thinking about waxing.

As I work from home, I wear make-up only on the weekends when we go out, usually.  Only eye make-up though...I hate the feeling of foundation on my face...like my pores are screaming out for air.

I do very light makeup everyday, mostly do cover up the circles under my eyes and to define my lashes. My eyes are such pale blue that my face almost looks blank if I don't wear mascara or a swipe of lip gloss.

I feel girlier if I shave. I'm pasty with dark hair so it's pretty obvious. That said, my hair grows slowly so I tend to only shave once a week or so.

I don't think these are things I should do, but they're things I do that make me feel better about myself.

  • I got depressed reading this poll.  I have to shave very single day or I'm a hairy mess.  The only time I don't is if no one is going to see me (DH doesn't mind too much) and that is rare.  Sigh.  I do my underarms and legs every day.

As for makeup.  I wear some sort of base every day at work or if I'm going out (either mineral or tinted moisturizer in the summer).  I tend to also wear mascara, a bit of neutral eye and a touch of lippy.  If I'm going out, I'll add to my eyeshadow and use eyeliner.

I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
