How do you feel about people who smoke in front of buildings?
I get so so so mad when I see someone standing in front of an entrance/exit to a building smoking knowing that I (along with everyone else who wants to go in or come out) has to walk by and breath in the smoke.
Yesterday I was walking out of Market Basket in Burlington. There was a woman there in her late 50's with two little girls on that horse carousel ride thing that you stick quarters in. This is directly in front of the entrance/exit. The woman was smoking. I was so mad so I glared at her.
I just feel like it is common courtesy if someone has to smoke in a public place that they move away from the doorway. What do you guys think?

I think its common courtesy to move far enough away from the doorway so that people entering and exiting do not have to breath in second-hand smoke, however, I cringe a bit when I see smoking being banned in public parks, on sidewalks, etc. I'm not a smoker (although I'll occasionally have one when I've been drinking) but it just seems SO big brother to me.
There was a rant on my neighborhood message board this week from someone complaining about smokers outside Somerville Theatre and how they shouldn't be allowed to smoke there. Since the theatre empties onto a public sidewalk, I don't see why it should be policed. I guess I just see personal liberties being banned as a slippery slope.
ETA: I do cringe when I see people smoking in close proximity to their children though. There is no excuse for that.
I'm with you on this one. If you're not allowed to smoke in public buildings, then you also shouldn't be allowed to smoke within a certain distance of the entrance. My mom is a smoker, and that was enough for me to never start.
When we went to see fireworks near our house, there was a couple passing back and forth a cigarette while the woman held her young daughter. It was hard for me not to say something.
I hold my breath and glare.
I have a problem with people smoking in public in general. I know it is their right, but it greatly affects those around them. I was sitting on the beach this summer and a woman lit up a little ways away from me. She wasn't right next to me, but I was then sitting in her smoke. I choose not to smoke because it isn't healthy for me, and don't feel like I should be subjected to it by others.
Agreed. I get that it's your right to smoke if you want...but it's also my right to NOT to smoke. I know that one right isn't more important than the other but still I don't want to be forced to inhale your stinky smoke.
I get annoyed by the people who smoke in front of our condo and the smoke drifts into my front facing bedroom... SO and I do not smoke, and we both hate the smell.
As far as where people should smoke, I just wish people would be respectful. Don't smoke right outside the door. I don't think there should be more laws, or rules about where they can smoke, just be respectful. The other thing that drives me crazy is cigarette butts all over the place. We had a neighbor that used to flick her butts out the window of her top floor condo. They would often end up on one of the decks on our building or in my garden. One even burnt a little mark on my deck chair. I just don't understand why people can't dispose of their trash properly.

That isn't a widespread rule and isn't feasible in many urban places. I work downtown and if the smokers had to be 50 feet from any door they'd have to take a train to the suburbs first
I am anti-smoking anyway. I dont think you should even be allowed to do it in public.
I can't walk around outside enjoying a beer. Why should you be able to enjoy a nasty cig that is polluting the air and my lungs at the same time?

Of course, that is a little different. I think work places should hold employees more accountable during down time. So if I can take a 20 min break to pump milk for my baby, and Joe can take a 20 minute break to smoke, no one should balk at Jane for taking a 20 minute break to read the paper and catch up on blogging.
